Artist description
Royal Fuzz Combine is a collection of individual worker units with ties to Martian Electric, Savage Kong, The Opaque Projector, The Thin Man, Robotic Storm Cloud, Orso and others. It formed out of the ashes of Martian Electric's apocalyptic and cryptic final recording session. |

Artist History
Royal Fuzz Combine is the growth from the spore that was Martian Electric. Martian Electric released "Sky-Fi" on Starfish Records in 1996, but saw little success. Guitarist Steve Libbey remarked that an IRS tax refund was the only thing to make the band any money. Given also the band's dislike of traditional means of album promotion, such as touring and endless mailings, Martian Electric as a commercial entity was doomed to a short lifespan. Yet the process of composing and recording still called to the band, and in 1997 they gathered at the Afghan Whigs' Ultrasuede Studios and recorded THE FOUR WALLS OF TODAY in one sitting. Actually, one sitting of live tracks, and months of overdubs at SureTone Studios. At last the album was in the can, but the band had split, and members were leaving Cincinnati for Chicago and Atlanta. The former Martians remained individually active, in such solo projects as Robotic Storm Cloud, Savage Kong and Billy Farnacle. In 1999, the idea sprung forth to reconvene in Columbus, Ohio, where Clark Libbey, brother and drummer/engineer, now worked at Blue House Studios. Deals were cut, and so the group, with the addition of Clark, the members of Chicago's The Thin Man and others from the Columbus area, plans an improvisational coagulation of musicians and instruments. What results will appear on this site, and ultimately on a DAM cd. Meanwhile, you can hear THE FOUR WALLS OF TODAY right here, or (please, we beg you) order the DAM cd. |
