Music Style
Throw Bob Dylan and Stevie Ray in a blender, blend for about 30 years and you get Owen Poteat. Certainly not as good as either one but the same heart-felt vocals and driving solos. |

Musical Influences
Had this band leader back in high school, Bud Grymes, that really spent some time teaching me the skills and love of improvisation. He was always saying, stretch the phrase, a little stronger, a little softer. I guess that early love of phrasing has led me to who I am musically now. Thanks Bud! Of course, I love to listen the the man with "The Tone" and strongest fingers in the business and mourn his death daily. Stevie knew what it meant to stretch a phrase and leaves us all wondering how he accomplished that so regurlarly. Bob Dylan influenced me with his diversity in song lyrics, the hidden meanings and the depth of his songs. Give him a guitar and a mic and he still makes hit records. He rocks! Jimmy Buffett also influenced me, yet not in the same way. He taught me to love what I do, do what I love and be myself in my music and if the industry doesn't like then they can just go... well you know what Jimmy would say. I was also influenced by a local guy around here, Mike Cross. He showed me that music can touch every aspect of a person's emotions. His Blue Ridge humor is deeply rooted in many of my songs and lyrics. |
