Artist History August 25, 1986 a then 16 year old keyboard wiz, Jaime Sevilla, drummer Roy Mateen, and myself decided we were ready to put together a band. We drafted, the late, Dwayne Gholston to play trumpet and Kyle Owens to throw down some funky bass. Dwayne suggested that we bring in his brother Darren Gholston to fill out the horn section. Thus was born The J*A*M Club. [Despite some folks insistance that JAM stood for "Jaime and Mac," it actually stands for "Jazz and More."] Jaime and I wrote the tunes -- fusion and instrumental R&B. The rest of our sets were covers of the same. Early on we were preparing for a rehearsal in the band room at Cal St. Univ. Bakersfield. It was right after an Improv class. All the students hadn't cleared out. Jaime and I kept hearing faint but hip lines over our stuff. We tracked it down to a guitar player with a little practice amp set at "one." (Yes, there are guitar players who don't have there volume knobs super-glued to "10." We asked Tstomu (Ih-sto-moo) Ishizuka to sit in as an audition -- he was our guitar player from that day forward. J*A*M-ology: I'd Like to thank Ken, Phil Hernandez, Paul C., Rob, Glenn Fong, Tim Cartwright, Johnny, Jarred Pope, & Doug for putting up with me through the duration of that band.
