Artist History
“… I like Nathan’s soulful reggae & funky folk…” Jack Johnson
For Nathan Kaye, the last two years have been an immense time of musical consolidations and turning points. From tours behind the great wall of China as well as supports for a diverse range of artists including massive pop acts such as, "The Corrs" the world's best female DJ, "Lisa Lashes" and Asia's biggest selling Canto-pop artist, "Eason Chan," also the writing of fresh new material for his upcoming solo album, he's been a busy boy to say the least. On stage Nathan's the kind of guy that everyone pays attention to, yet easy going and very approachable.
Nathan was born in Brisbane in 1974, the son of English immigrants and first of his family to be born in Australia. As a young child he would often invite the local neighbourhood into his basement, put on old Beatles and Elvis Presley records and perform to them. "Music's always been a diary for me. I can remember stuff like where I was at age 3 when I first heard Bob Marley's "Get Up Stand Up!" Nathan started penning his first songs at age 11.
"I was given a guitar at 15 by a Spanish guitar player, I taught myself Bob Marley, Beatles, U2 & Cat Stevens songs whilst hanging out fishing with friends at the beach." At age 16, he left home and moved to Sydney to attend the Newtown High School of Performing Arts. There he quickly excelled and was soon to gain recognition acting on television screens plus singing and winning awards in prominent Sydney jazz clubs and music venues, including performances to over 12,000 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre at age 18.
In 1998, he was led to the vibrant Byron Bay community of Northern NSW. In 1999 the band, "Dreamseeds" was formed, a firm platform for voicing his observations about the human condition and frustrations about the world's environmental and sociopolitical dilemmas.
His album, "Illumination," was recorded and released toward the end of the year 2000 with the reggae song, "Difference" reaching number 14 on the USA's huge mp3.com Reggae charts and the film clip for the song "The Shift" being aired on ABC's Rage in 2001 plus winning a Dolphin Award for best song in Funk/Hip-hop category.
"One of the most surreal experiences I've ever had was playing to an audience of 4,000 in the Peoples Liberation Army Barracks in China, then, immediately afterwards, doing a 25 minute TV interview on South China's largest TV show. That gets to about 250 million people! Bizarre!"
Whilst his songwriting is firmly based in it's folk and reggae roots it is embellished with funk & jazz overtones. "I just love playing a rehearsed folky-reggae song then spontaneously jamming a didge-funk groove to move a crowd with."
