    Artist description
In the rock world there are three types of music. You get the hard core, late night, hip hop, rap and metal - Linkin Park, Metalica and Marilyn Manson - you get the mainstream melodic rock - Creed, Bush and Bon Jovi - and finally you get the all time favourite underground genius rock. The type that is hard to find in CD stores, the type that stands the test of time, the type that everyone secretly loves to bits and pieces - The Cure, Placebo, Muse and the like. This variety of rock is finely tuned music, the lyrics say more in one sentence than whole ballads from other genres, and the lead vocalist usually has vocal abilities and song writing skills that belie the views and expectations of mainstream critics. Lead vocalists from these bands have unique and fascinating images and vocal talents; they croon song lyrics as though they were living every minute of the song. Their bands music is instantly recognizable and they play smaller yet capacity filled arenas and loads of great unplugged sessions. They are the smaller group of artists, the ones that usually have a single hit and about 30 albums that sell millions and nobodys knows it. They have fans that die with their latest, not so publicized, album in their record collections. They may not get as much media attention as the previous two rock bands but they leave their mark on the way music is for years to come. They are the alternative rock selection. We have such a rock band in our midst. Stemming from Johannesburg the bands name is aptly titled Marlowe. Made up of four school friends, they are slowly slipping into the spotlight like many of their alternative predecessors. The origins of the name Marlowe began with the classic Bogart and Bacall movie, The Big Sleep, where Scott was taken by the perfect script and the movies uncanny ability to have the right comments at the perfect time. Much like the band name and where it comes from, the musicians are true to the art, everything they do is thought provoking and deep whilst maintaining a professional outlook towards their music. From the moment they step on stage and the first note starts, you are fascinated. The guys have barely left school and had the chance to feel the wrath of life and they are standing on stage, tall as giants, playing like they have done it a thousands times before. Although in essence the band has only been around for a year as Marlowe with the addition of Jason, Conrad, Scott and Rory have been playing together for the past 6 years. The main influences that resonate from their music according to the band are Tool, from a musical point of view and Radiohead, from a vocals side. I hear more Muse and Deftones but lets not start the comparing thing now, this band is too unique to be pigeon holed or sized up. Scott Wareham, the bands lead vocalist has a vocal style so distinctive to the South African music scene that is leaving audiences captivated. The accomplished high and low notes that are the core of the bands sound have earned Marlowe some pretty fervent comments of appreciation from fellow musicians that come to watch them live. Up until recently they played without a bass player, but with the introduction of Jason, the band is ready to rock and roll with fuller, more intense sounds that welcome the low strumming of the bass guitar. All of the bands members delve in the arts in some way or another during the day. Whether it is studying advertising or writing jingles, they encompass their lives with their passion for the arts. Their music essentially is forceful and driven, but they manage to create a sound that floors you with it variations. Sometimes classed as Dream Pop, for want of a better name, Marlowes interpretation of the atmospheric subgenre of alternative rock is very difficult to define. Genius comes to mind. They bring a fresh new sound to the South African live circuit and their latest single Tears on the Abstract is just the start of a band that I believe will have a large following in years to come. They are performing extensively in order to make a name for themselves. So next time you see the name Marlowe in your local newspapers gig section, do yourself a favor and venture down, to the pub, get yourself the smoothest drink you know of and sit back and watch. This band is a keeper.
