B-Side Diaries - The Search For Megan Gelkes
It's not often that a band I have never heard of touches me the way the B-Side Diaries did with "The Search For Megan Gelkes." A keen combination of emo, punk and pop. Think older The Get Up Kids crossed with older Saves The Day and The Scaries. Despite the comparisons the B-Side Diaries have a disparate sound full of emotion and the susceptibility to catchy melodies, sharp lyrics and fervent vocals. Like much of the emo bands out there the lyrics deal with relationships, loss and despair. The B-Side Diaries keep things honest with witty lyrics that don't seem forced. I'd venture to say that much of the writing deals with personal experiences giving the band that extra edge in the writing process. Musically these guys are very talented and are not scared to defy the barriers that other bands place on their music. The dual guitars wage quite a battle as they intertwist their way around the up-tempo drumming and the involved bass lines. There are a few tempo changes that keep things interesting, a few nice solos and some instrumental interludes that showcase the musical talents these guys possess. The lead vocals absolutely blew me away. They range from sweet, almost sad singing to angrier, almost desperate singing slash yelling. They always fit the melody and the lyrics like a glove and provide the listener with that additional connection to the material. The passion in the vocals is apparent and it's so easy to get lost in the emotion that the vocals depict so aptly. "The Search For Megan Gelkes" is a very rare achievement for an unsigned band. It's a record that gets better with each listen and my only gripe is the length; five songs plus a hidden sixth track. I will definitely keep my eyes on this band and I urge you to check out "The Search For Megan Gelkes" for yourselves.
