Artist History
The old 33 1/3 spinning around and filling the room with the sounds of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite led Charlotte Seawell to an early passion for classical music.
Starting in elementary school, when the violin was first introduced as a musical choice, she moved on to study saxophone (well, there was no orchestra in junior high)
and later bassoon. A one year stint as drum major and student conductor only increased her passion for instrumental music. She would probably have continued down
that road if it has not been for that darn guitar!
Because of that guitar, as a sideline in high school, Charlotte began performing as a solo folk artist, playing at Fort Ord, Hunter Liggett, The Defense Language
Institute, and at a base outside of Frankfurt, Germany. Lacking a radio to hear music performed, she picked old tunes out of battered song books, interpreting
classic folk tunes for military audiences.
A trip to Colorado for college found her immersed in the folk scene, soaking up traveling artists and performing while continuing to write and explore her
own creative interests. A chance encounter with Seattle left her not sleepless, but breathless, and the immediate move following college allowed her to
join the ranks of periodic street musicians at the Pike Place Market, open mics and later, after a ten year hiatus, a performance at Folklife Festival in Seattle.
But in between, the lure of Colorado called her back, and she helped form a variety of country rock bands that performed through Colorado and Wyoming, including
for Cheyenne Frontier Days. As a finalist in the Colorado/Wyoming Marlboro Competition, she and Applegate (a group of musician friends) took her original tunes
all the way to the Turn of The Century theatre. It was there that she was asked by Raincrow, another finalist, to bring her tunes and join them to do warm up
in the summer of 1986 for Vince Gil and headliner Gary Morris at the Fiddler in the Green in Denver for the Independence Day celebration.
As Charlotte settled in to raise a family, she continued to compose, placing as quarter- finalist in the American Songwriter's Competition,
2nd in the Colorado Composer's festival (along with 10 other awards), and 1st in the Bellingham Composer's Competition. She has continued
to perform original compositions for special occasions and with other groups. This past year, she co-wrote a full scale musical, which had
a cast and crew of over 80, based on the historic Orphan Trains. Each Sunday, she helps lead worship at a small church in Snohomish, Washington.
Her first love of composing continues to keep her busy as she examines the landscape of the human heart through folk songs, musical theatre and especially songs of faith. |
