About Ian Jeffreys...
Ian Jeffreys' vocal talents have been widely praised by critics, fans, and fellow artists. After hearing him belt out a pop song, croon to a bossa, tear up some funk, or scat over a be-bop head, audiences often wonder if there is anything he can't sing. In fact, it was in that last category, at the age of 17, that he was awarded a Down Beat Student Music Award and given a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. But beneath the eclectic voice is the soul of a sensitive and intelligent songwriter, whose catchy melodies and clever lyrics pierce the hearts and minds of his listeners.
Ian Jeffreys' affinity for music was evident early on. At the age of four he was making up melodies and serenading his pre-school peers. In high school, when most of his friends were listening to top 40 radio, Ian was preoccupied with Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. The summer he turned 16 found him studying with such jazz legends as Sheila Jordan, Billy Taylor, and Yusef Lateef at the "Jazz in July" summer program. Knowing all this, one could only assume that Ian would spend his four years at Berklee immersed in a world of saxophones and seventh chords. But he surprised everyone, and chose to forge a different path.
Ian quickly realized two things: 1) music is about communication, and 2) he had something to say. He saw that as a jazz singer he would likely be performing old songs by other composers. It was then, in an environment where "singers" are seldom thought of as "musicians", that Ian decided to pursue a life as a songwriter. Through years of diligent study he gained a deep understanding of the language of music, and the music of language.
After college, Ian stayed in Boston for a few years and revisited his jazz roots once more to lead "The Double Agents", a dance band that entertained crowds of 200 and more playing swing, acid-jazz, and mambo every Saturday at the renowned Ryles Jazz Club. In spite of the band's loyal following, Ian ultimately decided to leave the group in order to hone his craft as a songwriter, and pursue the dream closest to his heart.
The new millennium brought Ian Jeffreys to New York City, where he has been hard at work recording his debut album, with visionary producer Judson Crane. The demos of their fruitful partnership have garnered attention and acclaim from key figures in the music industry and songwriting community alike. In 2002, he was selected for the BMI Songwriter's Workshop. This year, his song "Perpetual Bliss" was chosen from over 200 applicants to be presented at ASCAP's Pop Songwriter Workshop. But that is just the beginning of the accolades that await this promising, young artist.
