Press Reviews
"College buddies Steve Reidell (bass), Jason Ough (guitar) and CJ Wagner (drums) formed Five Dollar Foundation in 1999. Before long, the trio was a fixture in Madison clubs, coffeehouses and basements, and released the lauded Wrong If By Wrong You Mean Right in 2000. The band later inducted keyboardist Zaid Maxwell into their ranks, and this spring, the newly contoured Foundation produced a terrific five-song EP with the double-title Bright Light, Bright Light/Fourteen'll Get You Twenty. Here the boys sound better than ever, with Maxwell's spacey synths playing brilliantly off the group's energized blend of airtight melody and lyrical spryness." -- Al Ritchie, The Isthmus, July 12 2002 . . . . .
"A rather likeable five-track EP of happy-go-lucky, dynamic pop-rock from Madison, Wisconsin's Five Dollar Foundation that sees the four-some finding a nice balance between energetic performances and focusing on the strength of often sharp melodies. The subtle use of keyboards adds a nice touch to the otherwise standard power-pop trio format, and especially "Learn By Doing" benefits greatly from this. An even greater emphasis on adding nuances to their sound would be welcome, and not all of the tracks are equally noteworthy. All in all, though, this is a fine debut from a promising band, and I for one look forward to hear more." -- Stein Haukland, Ink19, July 10 2002 . . . . .
"Madison's Five Dollar Foundation has only been together a year, but you'd never guess that from listening to Wrong If By Wrong You Mean Right, the band's immensely assured debut CD. Full of dynamic, eager-to-please power-pop -- "Issues" is propelled by the most infectious keyboard hook since The Rentals' "Waiting" -- the album is an endlessly ingratiating sleeper." -- The Onion A.V. Club, November 16 2000 |
