Artist description
One listen to their debut offering, Japanese Bonus Track, and you will wonder how down holly remain one of Metropolitan D.C.s best kept musical secrets. Once you have seen them live, you will know that this band will not be a secret for long. Believing that good bands rise from good songs, down holly have focused their efforts on crafting well-written songs from the start. Hailed as a ...surprisingly powerful first effort and ...a vocal and musical hook smorgasbord, Japanese Bonus Track is an inspiring introduction to the down holly sound: melodically diverse, guitar and groove-heavy, hook-rich power crunch pop. Initial response has been promising: Bright Eyes, the EPs first single, was an EditorPick at www.washingtonpost.com and a Top 10 download on the corresponding MP3 site
The unique down holly sound stems from its four members, each of whom contributes elements from his diverse musical background. Bassist Lee Solomon has been performing and recording with various rock outfits since establishing himself in the early 90s with Virginia-based heavy rockers Lovebuzz (AKA Soul Driver). Drummer John Cunningham, a staple on the trendy east coast live scene, spent much of the last 10 years manning the skins for everything from hard rock to roots to jazz outfits, most recently in local faves Idiotstick, King Crush and General So. Guitarist Ted Morgan, an old-school D.C. axeman, cut his teeth in the early 90s recording for Bomb Apple Records with noise rock ensemble Crungehouse, and more recently with Colorado-based funk/jazz project, Rhythm Child. Finally, singer/guitarist Will Roberts has recorded and played throughout the Northeast, recently as frontman for local kings Idiotstick (with Cunningham) and dark pop rockers Anything Jones.
With seventeen recordings and hundreds of stage hours between them, the members of down holly deliver the performance and songwriting professionalism that only experience can teach. The down holly guitar-rich rock sound has been likened to current radio favorites Weezer, Jimmy Eat World and Foo Fighters, and to hook masters Cheap Trick, Dada and Catherine Wheel, though each of the band songs retain the musical stamp of creativity and originality that local music fans have come to demand. So if you are looking for a band showcasing tasteful hooks, a creatively tight rhythm section, and exciting melodies - or if you simply crave catchy power pop with bona fide lyrical ingenuity - look no further...down holly delivers.
