Artist History
So what do you expect from a band named after an evil doll? Get a grip before hell breaks loose in your face. Half-loud, half-wicked; but not quite so to speak as their Hardcore/thrashmetal sound would attest. Forming the band more than 4 years ago, little did this five-headed hydra know that what started as a hobby band would turn into a serious undertaking.
Formed during 1998, the band went through necessary line-up changes to arrive at what they are right now. It all started when two kids saw their fellow schoolmate's band (Abs, Yong, & Jojo's band; I.N.T.) play in a school activity amazed 'bout what they've seen. They started to form a band of their own, they recruited some of their close friends; Cocoy Donayre on vocals, Peter Sumagaysay on rhythm guitars, Runel on lead guitars and Maki on bass, they later recruited Joshua Sur on vocals and Karlo Lao( from the band, I.N.T.) sessionist on drums. C.O.C. did not start as a rapcore band, they started as an alternative rock band, playing songs from The Offspring, Blur, & Greenday. Their 1st gig was during a school activity, everything went good. The band felt how it is, playing onstage with the crowd and decided to continue and trying to get every oppurtunity they could have. The 2nd gig was nearly a disaster when Karlo suddenly backed-out. (he priorities his band I.N.T. that time) but suddenly a guy from another band offered his help. Eventhough they were not able to rehearse with that guy, the show went good, somehow. The band was inactive after that, they lost Joshua cuz' he was advised to transfer to another school, Cocoy was scolded by his parents because of the band and eventually was forced to quit by his mom, and Peter lost his interest on the band..
Eager to play onstage again, Ron & Maki decided to recruit Abs & Yong (both were members of I.N.T). Because of some musical differences, Abs & Yong left I.N.T and joined C.O.C. The new line-up is Abs on vocals, Maki on bass, Ron on guitars, and Yong on drums. The band was reborn, covering acts from Silverchair, Sandwich, Rage Against the Machine, Kid Rock, Slapshock, Limp Bizkit, & Korn enabling them to have so many music repertoire ranging from Alternative to Nu Metal music. The 1st & 2nd school gigs went good. There was a time when Abs' sister's boyfriend, Randy, gave them an oppotunity to play on a club where his band plays. The band was so happy & excited given such opportunity. In their high-school days, the band rehearses even during examinations. The band was not satisfied on just playing cover music, they want on to make and play their own songs. So the band had their first track called "Evil in my head". Because of their influence from Korn, the music is a bit Korn-ish, bound with rap and screams. The band joined the Nu Rock Assembly 1999 contest, but wasn't able to qualify because the demo song they've submitted was not broadcast quality; they were not prepared for it and was not able to fund a demo recording.
During early college days, the band underwent struggles and some differences in schedules in school. They were only able to rehearse once a month. Also, Yong's absences on band meetings forced Abs to shift and play drums while Maki does the vocals, later the band decided to get Jojo as their bassist while Ron remains on guitars. The band rehearses on some new songs, and later Yong reunited with the band, making them more aggressive on vocals. And right now, they don't mind the long wait for the "break" thing.
Five friends who met in HCDC (Holy Cross of Davao College) during high-school days, they overcame the struggle despite each of them going to different schools in college . The USEP-based hardcore moshpitters started their chops on the campus and eventually got exposure at a local underground scene and are currently roaming the city for gigs or whatever, come what may. Priority goes to USEP (University of Southeastern Philippines) which goes to show their gratitude for sheltering their music and the support and opportunities the band gets. They list Slipknot, Mudvayne, System of a Down, Factory 81, Deftones and with due respect to contemporary artists like Slapshock, Greyhoundz, Cheese, and ChicoSci as their influences, working their sounds to create something new, without the usual aftershocks, enabling them to adopt their own energy that would be scary yet aggressive, loud but not noisy;this band prefers to scare instead of amuse. Turning the crowd into moshpitting zealots, they admit that their maturity is not that strong, yet. The band plans to complete its five-track demo and are making independent effort for success but doing the little things such as their campus performances and local band competitions. Their song, "live and let it bleed" was even included on an amateur school film at HCDC. Hoping to have a successful carreer in the future, this band may prove that true friendship last long. Afterall, they treat each other like brothers; bound by blood and the muSICK.
