    Artist History
evenflowerskill came into being in early March 2002. Long time guitar twiddler Andy Rodger had not been in a band for over a year, having split from his previous outfit Seraphim to attend Coventry University, and he was bored. His housemate, Andy Price, was working on his Ph.D. at Warwick. In his spare time he was organising rock nights, booking bands and DJing locally. He had, well, no musical talent whatsoever. He did have, however, a large record collection. The two bonded over a mutual love of rock, metal, hardcore and especially emocore. It was this record collection that inspired Andy R (nicknamed Beard, to avoid 'Andy' related confusion - despite the fact Andy P also had random facial hair) to persuade (well, bully really) Andy P (or 'Doc' - either a reference to his Ph.D. or the Seven Dwarves, take your pick) to pick up a bass guitar. After Andy R drummed the Deftones' "Be quiet and drive" tab into Andy P's head, the Doc was hooked. Dan was a close friend of Andy P's courtesy of Coventry's 'No Logo' punk and hardcore night and he was looking to join a band. He expressed this wish to Andy P the day after the Bass debacle, whilst watching the turgid dross that filled the MTV2 playlist. As he couldn't play anything (and had strong opinions on vocal styles) it was decided he should sing. Fate, huh? Oh but where to find the elusive musician known as "Drummer"? Again fate intervened by allowing Doc and Dan to gatecrash a sixth form party and witness local ska kids Maxwell and their quality drummer Christoph. After a little bit of persuasion Chris was successfully poached and evenflowerskill were born. The initial sessions yielded the aggro-nu-metal of 'Different Words', the prog emo of 'Again' and the jazz/hardcore stylings of 'Tarzan'. Gradually the groups' individual influences came together. Andy R lent a sense of melody as well as crushing riffs by drawing equally from the Smashing Pumpkins and the hardcore styles of Glassjaw and Deftones. Chris and Andy P's rhythm section provided a stable aggressive backbone, and Dan's meteoric vocal topped the cake perfectly. Then Beard and Doc had their instruments stolen - a beautiful 70's Yamaha SG and a cheap but much loved Tanglewood bass - whilst undertaking a short film project. Cue much heartbreak and a cessation of practices for a while. Andy R fished into his savings and bought a new PRS guitar and Doc was forced to fix up an old bass - something he continually whinged about. The resulting sessions yielded the Helmet influenced 'By Illogical Design'. The band headed to London to commit the 'Loose Slots and Friendly Service' EP to tape live under the bloodshot eyes of maverick genius/generally nice bloke Malcolm Gayner at the Orange and Blue Room Studio. A new tune 'Guatemala', a complex melodic post-hardcore effort was written and recorded on the spot. With recording completed the band took on the prospect of a live audience for the first time, making their live debut on Monday 19th August in Leamington. Doc was then advised to quit whining and buy a new bass. Well, he bought a new bass at least. Since then the band have gone on to support luminaries such as Heliopause, Flood, local heroes Frakkture, Defenestration, the astounding Beecher and a recent show Upstairs at the Garage in London with the wonderful Whoremoan. The band's live show is energetic and passionate, with the band picking up fans at every show. Recently EFK stormed the inaugaral Exposure 2002 festival in Rugby, gaining praise in Kerrang! magazine. evenflowerskill are currently in and out of various concrete rooms in the Coventry region writing new material and rehearsing for shows. Two new songs are complete, 'Keane Aer Lingus' featuring two minutes of Jazz prefacing the heaviest tune the band have written to date, and 'Cold Town Crush', a Hundred Reasons-esque Emo-rock tune blended with punky hardcore. Several more tunes are currently under construction. evenflowerskill are available to play venues up and down the country. The band will enter the studio again in July to record 15 songs to be released across an EP and a Full length. In the meantime evenflowerskill will continue to play both locally and nationally, including a forthcoming show at the Underworld in Camden with Djevara.

Tonight was surely intended to be a metal night. Perhaps it was, however if it was intended to be led by the headlining band, this was of course never ever going to happen. With a superb name and demo – [‘Loose Slots and Friendly Service’] their sound check saw Even Flowers Kill make a very good first impression. Melodically led with diverse jazz/rock tendencies and wide vocals, the band ease into slow and calm melodies, followed abruptly by System Of A Down tainted madness. As clearly as the label on EFK reads ‘Incubus’, I don’t see it. They are soulful and have vocals that are sung (the majority of the time, when they aren’t going mad) with a tender feel to them. They do definitely have that earthy, spontaneous, innate edge to them but likening Even Flowers Kill to Incubus is plain lazy. For the Coventry audience, Even Flowers Kill do not go down as well as deserved. Nowhere near in fact. Assuming the majority of the crowd are here for Defenestration, it isn’t at all surprising. What is suprising is that Even Flowers kill are opening for them. A band that clearly do not think in straight lines and a very promising one at that. Reviewed by Meeshi for Audiogoik e-zine. (17/01/03 gig supporting Defenestration @ The Jailhouse, Coventry) January 2003 Sudden change in direction ahoy! One of only two metal bands on this “Punk and Metal All-dayer”, evenflowerskill managed to maintain the pace and crowd interest over a muscular 25 minute, 5 song set. Blending Incubus and System of a Down with emocore influences and Jazz breaks the band played energetically and to a great crowd reaction. The songs were superbly dynamic, melodic and at times fairly intense, shifting from delicate passages to heavy grooves and speedy sections, the band constantly trying to play with perceptions, sometimes succeeding. EFK improve with every show and are well worth checking out. Reviewed by Andy for Audiogoik e-zine. (24/01/03 Punk/metal all-dayer @ The Jailhouse, Coventry) January 2003 Evenflowerskill kicked things off, a “Jazz-core” outfit that intrigued and surprised the modest yet attentive crowd. All nodded appreciatively as the ‘Flowers conjured up jazzy interludes interspersed with hardcore histrionics reminiscent of Dillinger Escape Plan. The highlight of the set had to be “By Illogical Design;” a pleasant subtle ride through a multi-layered landscape that kept everyone’s interest. This was a firm favourite with the crowd. Their performance was solid and consistent throughout, although slightly marred by an inadequate PA system, as their complex jazz sections did not translate well in a live environment. Reviewed by Corrina. We've no idea who it's for but it's included because we think someone saying we sound like Dillinger Escape Plan is quite amusing. (17/01/03 gig supporting Defenestration @ The Jailhouse, Coventry) December 2002 "Maximum volume is created and maintained by local bruisers evenflowerskill" Steve Beebee, Kerrang! 936 (Exposure 2002, 8/12/02) November 2002 I’ve seen this band before, but I’m still surprised by just how schizophrenic their music is – from jazz to acoustic to hardcore, working out the influences is an impossible task as there are just so many! Amazingly talented and varied guitars, held together by powerful bass and insane rhythms, the vocals slide effortlessly from pure and tuneful to painful screaming – Dan almost looks like he’s about to explode in rage. There’s also an instrumental – maybe not something you’d expect to see, but it works just fine. I was impressed by bassist Doc’s talent of playing whilst simultaneously replacing a fallen cymbal and stand. Again and again Evenflowerskill surprise you – delicate, almost classical guitar pieces break out into an absolute frenzy of noise…and then back to gentle tones. The change of styles is so dramatic and quick that you’d wonder if it had actually happened – am I going insane here? It’s impossible to stress how important the chameleon-like nature of musical styles is to Evenflowerskill. Powerful, dramatic and beautiful all at the same time, they’re impossible to classify – but why would you want to? Reviewed by The Lovely Lou for The Warwick Boar. (9/11/02 gig supporting Beecher @ Platform 5, Coventry) November 2002 Evenflowerskill (****) were band of the night, and I'm not just saying that. If it's still hip to mention emo without being lumped into the "Coldplay fan" category, then I'll say that, although that would be ignoring the foraging into metal (and even Mogwai on amphetamines on one song). OK, so the singer's voice needs work (though in fairness it WAS shot), and it veered into Incubus here and there, but considering the stage they're at, it's impressive stuff.
