Artist description
NoiZ.
An obscure term for an enigmatic group of musicians. Four young souls destined to travel
through the bowels of Hell and back. The birth of this band was more paligenesis than anything.
The middle of 2000 found the band near death, drifting in and out of existence. But rising from
the ashes was NoiZ, with more sheer ferocity than ever before. NoiZ now treads a path that
refuses to be pinned down to a particular genre or derivative force.
In their latest self-released album, “Excerpts from a Tattered and Lost Art”, listeners may
feel like they are being toyed with. For at one moment, rich, symphonic intros and bridges
permeate a track and woo listeners into a fragile sense of security. Then suddenly, the glass walls
of this soft sanctum shatter with malignant intensity. The most noticeable explosion is that of
drummer Damon Ashenfelter, whose breakneck pace is only broken for hypnotic Doom Metal
beats and interludes of a reflective, soft nature. Behind it all, thundering bass riffs allow for a
sense of direction within the tumult of confusion, delivered by bassist Jacob Miller. Taking
center stage are the intricate guitar parts crunched out by guitarist Ben Chiles. Reflective and
menacing, destructive and sometimes even sacred, these versatile riffs are delivered with
unpredictability. Just when it would seem as if the sound had settled, a fourth element plunges
into the fray. An ear-splitting scream rakes the heavens as frontman Daniel Harris walks the thin
line between fury and heartfelt sorrow.
What emerges from these elements is something truly fascinating and original. A brutal
merging of the contradictory. Indifference and passion, darkness and light, the infernal and the
eternal. But NoiZ insists that their image - like their dark, poetic lyrics - are open to
interpretation. At one moment, their eyes are rolled back while the vocalist emits demonic
shrieks, and the next, they are raising their hands to Heaven, longing for redemption. NoiZ is
best summed up in a lyric from their song ‘Morbid Promise’: “Not all who wander are lost”.
NoiZ enters the studio in mid-July to record 12 tracks for their sophomore release, with
the working title "Metal Dawn". Lyrically the album will, for the first time be hand-written
("exerpts.." took texts of poetry directly from the bible). The new songs allow NoiZ to expand
even further, as they reach into the dark depths of Black and Death Metal while maintaining an
unmistakeably solemn frailty atmospherically. Less repetition is practiced, and more spontaneity
is practiced, guitar riffs heavy and mesmerizing, yet soft and soothing. Drums of a highly unique
quality, with heavy speed metal mized in with the jazzy specialties of drummer Damon Ashenfelter.
Bass slow, dragging, with heavy crunch. And the demonic shrieks and earth shaking deep growls that
have already become a trademark of specialty for the band. |
