    Artist description
Eileen Huang, born in China, began her piano studies at the age of six. At eleven years old, she won the national Chinese Young Musician's Performance Competition. The same year she began her studies at the Central Conservatory in Beijing. The Cultural Revolution began in 1966, and the same year she graduated from the conservatory. Her career was put on hold while she worked on a farm, planting rice and cooking for 200 other "farmers" who were her school mates. Like many other musicians in China, Eileen's career was forcefully interrupted for seven years. Following the revolution, Eileen was professionally engaged as a pianist with the Symphony Orchestra of the Central Ballet Company in Beijing, where her repetory was restricted to the "Yellow River Concerto and a few other Chinese pieces. Upon her arrival in the United States in 1979, she entered Mills College in Oakland, California as a graduate student under Bernhard Abramoxitch. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Music Performance and Literature in 1982 and was honored with the Flora Boyd Memorial Award for best performance on the piano. Between 1987 and 1990, Eileen studied and performed in Portugal, France and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria under Helena Costa, whose mentors included Alfred Cortot and Edwin Fischer. Eileen entered concert life with performances for piano solo, chamber music and concertos with orchestra. At the same time Eileen enthusiastically introduced her repertory of Chinese piano music to Western audiences. Pursuing this direction, Eileen has recorded several CDs which present the music of her country: 1988 -- Chinese Piano Works 1993 --Ancient and Modern Chinese Music Vol. 1 1994 -- Yellow River Concerto with China Central Philharmonic 1995 -- Longing (with her arrangements of Chinese folksongs) 1996 Ancient and Modern Chinese Music Vol.2 (the music on this website) 1998 -- Chinese Folk Songs Since 1998 Eileen has lived in Positano, Italy, where she directs the International Chamber Music Course and Festival of Positano.
