Artist History
The band seems to have come together quite mysteriously. Tony, the lead singer in the band The Almighty Grind (TAG - www.thealmightygrind.com) is a relative of Zane's (Vocalist - Tunnel Rats). The two had performed together intermittently with Zane's husband Alex, and longtime friend Brandy, who lended vocal highlights and raps to their songs and shows. They had performed throughout Arizona and parts of California until early 2002. At that time, they were known as Saturday Night Freestyle, and the music they performed with was created predominantly by Tony on his MPC 2000. It was your typical electronically created hip hop/rap collaboration. Well, Tony had mentioned on a few occasions how great it was to be performing with a live band (TAG). The energy, hype, and soul emitted during TAG's show far outweighed what SNF was feeling off of the MPC. These comments got the ball rolling in Zane's head... "What if we had a band backing us up," she thought. The idea churned in her head for months. It wasn't until she and Alex visited a local tavern to watch TAG play that she recognized what Tony was saying months earlier. She now had a goal. She wanted a live band. But, she didn't know where to start. She was already getting pressure from her brother Dax (producer/songwriter - Tunnel Rat Music) to write and record a solo album, and to put together songs with SNF for upcoming artist compilation CD's. How could they manage to squeeze a band into all of this? In February of 2001, Zane decided to invite the core songwriting section of TAG (Fernando, Kevin, and TRayD) over to her house to help work on some songs she had conceived with the rest of SNF. Fernando, realizing a good opportunity, called former TAG drummer and songwriter Mike Reynaud over with him to assist in the project. When they all sat down and put their heads together on one of those songs, a magical thing happened. As with the opening segment of any supergroups story, the band 'clicked.' Sounds fell into place, vocals carreened over rhythmns, and highlights seemed to weave themselves in and out of open pockets in the song. The phrase "it was meant to be" felt appropriate. Over the next four months of 2002, and up until today, SNF has been steadfastly putting together a live show, as well as an album which highlights the culmination of their songwriting talents and work.
