Artist History
While stationed in Pensacola, Florida serving a 5 year stint in the US Navy, Springfield, OH local Singer/Songwriter, Kameko Jennings, started recording his solo work under the moniker Suicide Seven. In 1998 he self-released the 8 song LP “Leave”. The album was a bizarre blend of punk rock and folk music, and might have been a little too abrasive for the mainstream audience. Never the less it was an ambitious endeavor, unique and original with dark, intriguing lyrics and unmistakable vocals. At the same time he started a small indie label with the basic purpose to release all the music created by Suicide Seven. The label was aptly named Bad Job Records (a small dig at a day job he wasn’t particularly happy with).
After releasing “Leave”, Kameko went on to form the Pensacola local band RX with the ever-talented drummer Anthony Reidfield and gifted guitarist Valentino Salazar. This band lasted for approximately 1 year and released a 10 song LP entitled “After Hours Service” under the Bad Job Records Label in 1999. The 3 ultimately and with much pain decided to walk away from RX after a long search to find a good bass player with the right attitude failed. And with the break-up of RX another outlet was needed for Kameko’s music…. Suicide Seven was pushed back to the forefront.
Suicide Seven: “Sharing The Quick Death Experience” was self-released in April of 2000 by a more seasoned, more experienced Kameko Jennings. He brought in his former band-mate from RX Anthony Redfield to play drums on the record. The blend of folk music and punk rock was still there, but the lyrics had grown in depth and his vocal performance had obviously cultivated to a higher level. The 6 song EP blended much better than “Leave” and received nods from Internet fanzines and locals alike.
After this Kameko finished his stint in the Navy and moved to Rhode Island where his wife was from originally. They lived there for about a year or so, during which time he tested the music scene, trying out for various bands that might need a vocalist or guitar player. Rhode Island was too expensive, and too crowded for the struggling couple to make it and they eventually wound up moving to Ohio. Here there was more room, less people, lower cost of living, and for now it seemed like the best place to try and start up a life post Navy.
And in the summer of 2002, significantly in the town where he was born, Kameko released the third installment in the Suicide Seven discography, “The Midnight Wasteland”. This 12 song LP is special in that it was recorded entirely from his home. Without expensive studio fees to limit the amount of time he had to get things right, this album sounds more thought out and blends from one song to the next gracefully. Suicide Seven really falls into it’s own sound on this record. With more intricate guitar than on previous Suicide Seven releases, and a little less introverted lyrically, the album paints a dark, cynical yet sometimes funny and self-deprecating picture. Of the 3 Suicide Seven albums this is the definitive to date in my opinion.
Currently, Kameko is working with his uncle and some friends on a new band that has been dubbed "16 Flavors of Funk". Plans for a 10 to 12 song album are in the works. More on this in the future.
