Artist History
Before starting grade school, John Nickles spent
time growing up in a trailer on cinder blocks
across from a quarry in the small town of Earlton,
in the Catskill Mountains of New York State.
The address was 1 High Hill Road because high on
a hill, there was a road, with no one else on it.
With no friends, a big pile of dirt and some
plastic army men were all the entertainment to be
had. Poverty forced a return to his birthplace of
Brooklyn, New York. After taking up the guitar at
age 15, John began performing live in the New York
City area in early 1990 with the power trio,
Strontium Dog. Hoping to be discovered, the
alternative punk rock act dissolved in infamy over
a soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend in 1993.
Flashback 1996. From the ashes, an energetic blast
of turbo-pop called Mint, rose on the college
radio scene, with two CDs charting in the top 30
at over 30 stations and gaining airplay at over
150 stations nationwide. CMJ New Music Report
chose Mint as the A&R pick in a May 2000 issue,
saying: 'impressive in both quantity and quality
with solid songwriting and punchy, energetic
guitar playing', and 'Mints songs are both
structurally sound and varied, they display an
unusually easy compatibility with the FM dial.'
Heavy rotation and favorable reviews brought the
majors calling, but a deal was not inked with
Sony, MCA, or Grand Royal. After a host of
drummers and creative differences, Mint
unofficially disbanded and John embarked on a solo
career.
While the Mint material was hailed by some for its
production savvy, the new work is marked by its
homegrown flavor; read smoked-out Sun Studios.
All the material was recorded at home, on either
4-track cassette or digital 8-track.
With a relaxed feel, almost easy listening,
with more emphasis on sound than song,
more atmosphere than hook. Its Country & Western,
Cowboys & Indians, Keyboards & Drum Loops.
Youre alone in the desert and the only thing to
quench your thirst is a tall cool glass of reverb.
Years from now, this record might be the
touchstone of a new musical genre, Dubabilly.
Ladies and Gentlemen, you dont have to love this
record, but this record is going to love you.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this record is mint for you.
