Artist description
Julia Greenberg's flair for combining pop hooks and unexpected melodies, as well as her sly and affecting lyrics, have brought her and her band to the center of the New York music scene.
Julia can trace her musical roots back to her grandfather Leo, who was a singer for the Ziegfeld Follies, and who married Esther to form a husband and wife vaudeville act. Born and raised in the Village View housing project on the then still pure Avenue A, Julia soaked in the music around her: from her grandparent's nightclub jazz to her older sister's Cars and Blondie albums to the labor union anthems her hippie counselors at her lefty summer camp used to teach her how to play guitar.
A vocal student at New York's prestigious High School of Music and Art, Julia attempted Bach chorales and gospel music, all the while devouring the eighties pop that had suddenly begun blaring out of her music television 24 miraculous hours a day. During college, she briefly put her music obsessions on hold and devoted herself to her study of Russian literature and history, living in Moscow for a while to learn the language. However, she was once again distracted by the need to rock when she was asked to front the country punk band, The Cowlicks who spent their college weekends and vacations touring the North-East and playing the same NY clubs that would eventually book Julia's solo project.
Shortly after recording a full length album, produced by Celtic fiddle legend Johnnie Cunningham, the Cowlicks went the way of most college bands. Julia began to concentrate on songwriting. Experimenting with her disparate influences (which now prominently featured Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Billy Bragg), she developed a sound that she finally felt was her own unique musical expression. Her new material attracted a first rate band to her new solo project: Frank Vilardi (Jewel, Shawn Colvin) on drums, Jeremy Chatzky (Ronnie Spector, Bruce Springsteen, Hedwig and the Angry Inch) on Bass, and Mark Bosch (Carol King, Jules Shear) on guitar.
Julia recently completed her first full-length CD, "Past Your Eyes," available on Cropduster Records. The 10 song disc is produced by James Mastro who also produced Debby Schwartz's Mercury debut and Natalie Farr's Velvel release. It features guest artists Jill Sobule and Chris Weilding (Cheater, Hedwig & the Angry Inch).
While recording the CD, Julia was introduced to several musicians from the bands Birdy, and the Other 99, who were recording their own independent CDs. Watching many of their friends with developing careers languishing away on major labels that were not supporting them at all, they decided to band together (so to speak) and form their own label, Cropduster Records. A cooperative approach that would make her hippie counselors proud. |
