Artist description
Emm Gryner is driven. Always searching, exploring and discovering, her songs stem from the darkest depths and seek to solve the unexplainable. With a keen ear for melody, and a lyrical twist that brings calm delivery to songs with an unyielding and unpredictable undertow, Gryner delivers her third album in as many years. Anchored by the deep resonance of her bass-playing and buoyed by her grace on piano, as well as guitar and keyboard, this recording may have begun as a musical lab test and ended up a success. |

Artist History
Small-town Ontario native Emm Gryner came to Toronto to carve out a career for herself in music. Winnings from radio-sponsored songwriting contests (Q107, Mix 99.9), helped her release her first indie album, The Original Leap Year. A huge critical and commercial success, Leap Year landed her a major-label record deal with Mercury Records. /// The summer of '98 saw the release of Emm's major label debut Public, a Juno nomination, and a hit single in the bouncy-yet-dark "Summerlong". Heavy touring saw her cross the continent with such acts as Lilith Fair, Bernard Butler (ex-Suede), the Cardigans, Big Wreck, Rufus Wainwright, Chantal Kreviazuk, and Spirit of the West. /// Then, in the Big Merger, Universal swallowed up Mercury/Polygram and proceeded to dump most of their artists, including Emm. Rather than view the event as a setback, Emm seized it as an opportunity to regain control of all aspects of her music. In between touring with star acts like the Philosopher Kings, Tom Cochrane, and Alanis Morrissette, she immediately set about recording a brand new album. The result is quite possibly her best album yet. /// Now playing: Science Fair. /// ADDENDUM: October 1999 saw Emm joining the ageless DAVID BOWIE in a mini-tour of Europe as a backup vocalist in his last shows of the millenium. Press Reviews
Truly a gifted lyric poet, Emm has the potential to be a Sarah McLachlan for the millennium... - Watch, 1999 /// Lilith Fair bills itself as "a celebration of women in music,"... but it was Canadian Emm Gryner who seemed the day's greatest discovery. A strong writer and accomplished pianist, her singing had such emotional and melodic appeal that she was able to make songs like "Phonecall 45" and "Acid" seem instantly familiar - Baltimore Sun, 1998 /// ...wickedly addictive on several levels. Lyrically, Gryner's diary-of-a-young-girl confessionals have enough resonance to touch most listeners, but remain oblique enough to avoid being too soul-baring. The impressive wordplay is only enriched further by her rich and expressive voice. To top it all off, the music is insidiously hooky -- these songs will claw their way into your brain and take up permanent residence. - Imprint, 1998 |
