CHARGED – BIOG
In a society where traditions have a great need to be celebrated through the ongoing process of redefinition. Charged fuse their experiences of living among an urban industrial landscape into a unique style of music. An insight into a very real, sometimes-dark world, dragged to the surface from under the skin of supplanted people.
Conceived by frontman Harvinder Sangha whose outlook on life has been shaped by North East off licences, second hand cars, chemicals, the Welsh mountains, Hong Kong silver trade, wideboy dealings, good beatings, digging holes and strung out logic. Charged provide conscious social commentary against a backdrop of Indian culture mashed with urban British beats - a paranoid frenzy with realism at its core as opposed to the soundbite liberalism that usually prevails.
The main base of the band is Harvinder on vocals, DJ Marvin on decks blips
Karl on mix and percussion. Their debut EP, "Indian Gangsta" (released on Nation in 1998), explored their outlook on the schizophrenic values of being both Indian and Gora. Blurred pictures of Britain and India crash in the mind in search of an identity. The result of having to find role models in Khan Singh, the 'Star Trek' bad boy rather than aspiring to images of subservient Indians in sitcoms. Paranoia fuelled by easy to label/easy to interview media images- shopkeeper, looters or colonial clowns.
Charged are not about highlighting the negativity in their lives but forge a positive way forward. They don't appertain to any one nation- the displaced generation have twice the culture of a bigot and belong the world over.
Charged are a torrent, a rush, a phenomenon, soaring above the heads of the people their political agenda despises.
