Artist History
Clark Parkhurst and Kathryn Hong, making music for the past 2 years as
Wine Dark Sea, do all the writing, vocals, guitar, bass, and keyboards
and most of the drumming and percussion, as well as the recording and
engineering for our songs. Before we came to focus on music in our late
30s and early 40s, each of us had spent many years in other creative
pursuits—Kathryn as a poet, and Clark as a photographer and artist. Now,
making music provides a creative outlet that satisfies our urge to
respond to the experience of living through the making of art and uses
all our talents, skills, and multiple senses in that response. We bring
to songwriting eclectic influences from the past and a strong drive to
express our thoughts and feelings about the joys, mysteries, and quirks
of living, working, and loving in modern times through music. The
merging of influences gives us a musical vocabulary that mirrors the
richness and diversity in the new global context.
We grew up during the 1960s and 70s and were influenced
early on by both country music and classic rock. After attending
college, we moved to the Twin Cities, where we now work at “regular”
jobs during the days (Clark in the Research and Development unit of a
large photography company and Kathryn as a senior editor at a nonprofit
research organization) and spend many evenings and weekends on
songwriting and recordingg |
