Artist description
It seems that rock is back in today's underground music world. As hard as it is to believe, tried and true
rock and roll lay dormant for the past ten years as bands like Matchbox 20, Limp Bizkit, and Britney
Spears superceded power-chords and whammy-bars. But, rock is back and for now it's here to stay. There's
only one problem: it has lost the threatening potency it once had in spades. Rock and roll is no longer
dangerous-too often these days all it takes to be in a rock band is some tight jeans, a designer hair style, and
maybe some eyeliner and presto! you're a rock and roll star. Yeah right.
Fortunately there some bands for whom rock and roll never went away. There are some bands
whose members didn't sink their teeth into Green Day during the mid-90s punk explosion, but delved into
their roots, with bands like the Bad Brains, Fishbone, Ted Nugent, the Misfits, even Rancid. These type of
people aren't especially verbal about their belief that Guns n Roses rocked harder than Moby ever could, but
they'll drink you under the table before Sweet Child o' Mine is over.
Enter Mensch, an amalgam of Atlanta, GA punk ass rock n roll attitude and New York City
aggression. The band, originally conceived by guitarist, Aaron Lefkove and some friends of his at work, as
an outfit that would be one of two things: the Jewish religion's answer to Brutal Truth, or the Jewish
religion's answer to Skrewdriver. Lefkove put his money where his mouth is and recruited long time friend,
Seth "The Goon" Abrams to sing, childhood buddies Elliot and Dave to play drums and bass respectively.
Their friend Ben, who had been playing second guitar, left the band and Elliot took his position-while
Vinnie became the skinsman-and the band was complete and ready to write some songs.
And write they did. Well into the spring the band churned out a number of tunes as balls-to-the-
wall as the New York Dolls, as rhythmic as Rollins Band, as in-your-face as the Misfits, and as sincere as
Tom Waits. The songs were tight, they were interesting, they were fucking solid. What started out as a joke
to write some songs to piss off Christians and celebrate Jewish pride, quickly became a serious band with
focus and determination. Plus, most of the band was made up of goyem so singing about Jewish issues with
a straight face was kind of tough at that point (but not before their friends in H20 dubbed them "Jewdriver,"
a genre they monopolized with pleasure).
Soon the band was ready to play some rock shows. They wanted a chance to strut their stuff on
stage and show the world that they too could rock with the best of them. Long time Ramones confidant and
art-director, Arturo Vega, took them under his wing and asked them to play at the Joey Ramone tribute
contest at the CBGB's. The band played to a sold-out club, rocked the crowd's faux leopard skin coats to
shreds, and blew everyone away with their Ramones-inspired tune, "I Don't Wanna be a Schnook." Abrams
says: "the song is about not being ordinary. It's about doing whatever it is you do with passion and
honesty." This kind of genuine thoughtfulness wowed the audience and the band took home first prize in
the contest and will soon be featured on the b-side of a single featuring surviving members of the Ramones
as the Bowery Electric Crew.
Now, the band is on a mission. They have tasted success and would like to see how far they can
go. They've got talent, that much is clear, but even more than that they have heart and drive to take them
anywhere they want to go. For now, they just want to play gutsy rock and roll that people dig. And from the
responses received at their early gigs, it looks like people are already talking about Mensch and the army
they are sure to spearhead.
