Artist description
FRITZ STEINEGGER writes:
I'm currently living in Mexico, playing recitals and
appearing as soloist with the symphonies here and
around Latin America.
The quality of several of these orchestras is
surprisingly high, and, in Mozart's Concerto 21, now
on the mp3 charts, I am playing with a truly
exceptional conductor, Enrique Barrios, and his
Orquesta Sinfonica de Aguascalientes (Mexico).
Like many of the leading orchestras here, it is made
up half of Mexican nationals and half of foreigners
(Russians, Cubans, Americans, et al)
Editors note: Fritz is known as having the largest memorized BACH reperitore of any Pianist. FRITZ STEINEGGER studied piano in New York
with Wolfgang Rose, at the Akademie in Vienna
with Ludwig Czaczkes, and at the Conservatoire
in Geneva with Nikita Magaloff. He was a
prize-winner at the International Casella
Competition, in Naples.
In recent years, Steinegger has appeared on
several continents, playing concerts from
India and Thailand to Mexico and Argentina.
Of Gordon Getty´s piano music, premiered on
this disc, Fritz Steinegger writes:
"I first became aware of Gordon Getty, the
composer, through his vocal works -- the
opera Plump Jack, the Emily Dickenson songs.
But when, at my behest, he mailed me his works
for solo piano -- many of them miniatures
from his student days -- I realized at once
that they too spoke in the distinctive voice
I had noted with such pleasure in his larger
works.
I hastened to program them on an up-coming
Los Angeles recital, and this recording
documents the Getty pieces played on that
evening.
The two Landler waltzes are open homages to
Schubert. Homework Suite is a collection of
short pieces written as extra "homework" when
Getty was a student at the San Francisco
Conservatory, in the 1960´s. And Echoes of
Usher comes from fragments of a never-
completed opera based on Poe´s The Fall of
the House of Usher."
