Artist description
You can describe Sakésho (pronounced sah kay show) as "a classic jazz quartet with roots deep in the traditional music of the French Caribbean" - but if you do, you'll miss the magic. And much of that magic is the biguine - the intensely syncopated, polyrhythmic music from the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe that provides Sakésho (HUCD 3069) with its driving inspiration.
Four friends, all master musicians - three of them born in the French Caribbean, and the fourth a virtually naturalized citizen of the Islands. All have biguine in their blood. |

Artist History
Of the four, Andy Narell is probably best known to American audiences. He's a virtuoso who has pioneered the role of the steel pan in contemporary music. He's also a star performer with legions of fans from New York City to Soweto and all points in between. Narell has made 13 albums, and he's recorded and/or performed with Marcus Miller, Chucho Valdes, Aretha Franklin, Hugh Masekela, and many, many others.
Piano ace Mario Canonge was born in Martinique, but currently resides in Paris - where he's a bandleader, a top jazz session player, and a recording artist with far too many albums to list here. He's a key figure in French Caribbean music, a formidable jazz pianist and composer, and one of the leading interpreters of biguine.
Like Canonge, bass wizard Michel Alibo was born in Martinique, and lives in Paris. For many years, he's been a fixture on the African-Caribbean scene, performing all over Europe and Africa with artists like Salif Keita, Yousou N'Dour, Cheb Mami, and scores of other high profile musicians. He's a talented composer, and a founding member of the popular jazz fusion band Sixun.
Jean Philippe Fanfant is a genius drummer from Guadeloupe, and another long-time Parisian studio ace. He's played with Canonge since 1991, and appeared on numerous albums with musicians like Kassav, Toure Kunda, Angelique Kidjo, etc. His mastery of the complex polyrhythms of the biguine defies description. In live performance, his hands and feet move in a blur - and the sounds emerging from his drum set would convince even seasoned listeners that there were at least two drummers at work.
