Artist History
After completing his North American Tour of Quidam in 1997, which he originated with Cirque du Soleil in 1996, Martin St-Pierre has continued to be recognized as a front man for improvised violin in the Classical, World Music, and Jazz communities. Having extensive knowledge of North Indian Classical Music and traditional Chinese Music, Martin can read and play traditional scores in both the aforementioned musical languages. Martin received his Bachelor and Master degree in Music Performance from Montreal University. As a violin player, Martin has performed with multiple orchestras including the world renowned Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne and I Musici. Martin was also the spokesperson for Yamaha's Electric Violin.
As a composer and arranger, Martin has a vast array of styles that he has completed for multiple projects. He has composed music for several theater companies including the famous Theatre Du Nouveau Monde for a Goldoni play. Martin was commissioned by Cirque Du Soleil to orchestrate for full orchestra a performance of which he then also conducted for Canada's prestigious Governor General's Awards in 1997.
Martin wrote, arranged and produced the album IL for acclaimed Canadian singer Isabelle Lehoux. Martin scored the promotional music for the nationally syndicated comic strip, Captain Ribman and has since finished his score for Eric Towner's Animation Short, Papercut. Martin will also be writing the score for Rick Fichter's (VFX D.P. for all Indiana Jones epics, Star Ship Troopers, first 3 Star Wars) much anticipated documentary on the First World War.
Martin is also an accomplished orchestra conductor having studied at the highly prestigious Pierre Monteux School for Orchestra Conducting in Maine. He conducted the distinguished Orchestre Symphonique de Jeunes Philippe-Filion from 1994-2001 and was requested to represent Quebec in Ottawa at the National Orchestra Festival, of which only 6 Orchestras of Canada were invited to participate. Martin took a sabbatical from the Orchestra to tour with Cirque Du Soleil from 1996-1997.
In 1999 Martin became the Artistic Director for the Orchestre De Chambre St-Laurent. Although he now resides in Los Angeles, he flies back for their annual Christmas Concerts, which he orchestrates as well as conducts.
Martin continues to write and score music for many of Cirque Du Soleil's principal artists who have now left Cirque to further their talents. Martin's unique approach to scoring enhances the artists choreography and defines their movements. Martin is currently writing music for two principle characters to sing in the new HBO television series, Carnivale premiering Fall 2003.
