Artist description
The Prize - Boston Herald 02/04/01
"A retro-metal movement in Boston? Believe it. The Prize, like Waltham and a surging number of other Hub bands, shuns the tough-guy pimpcore scene for a more polished rock sound, reminiscient of early '80's metal - without the spandex and hairspray. On their self-titled debut,The Prize proudly and unabashedly cranks out anthemic metal in the vein of Queensryche and early Van Halen, while their youthful exuberance hints at Aussie grungers Silverchair.
Songs like "Deer Women" and "I Hope" are catchy hard rockers, complete with heavy guitar hooks, sweeping choruses, and impressive metal solos by lead axeman Dave Martel. The band not only shows metal prowess, but also their Hub roots on "Neely", a tribute to former Bruin Cam."

Moving Up - Brockton Enterprise 11/11/01
Just about every child who learned to play guitar or drums has had a "garage band" at some time or another. One band, which began here in Brockton, is moving up the gig road and has played the Hard Rock Cafe among other big time venues. The performers - Andy Gulinello, Mike Grillo, Kyler Clarke, and Dave Martel - make up The Prize; a power trio with vocalizations by Gulinello. I got hold of a CD to hear what was being produced by local studio owner Lou Villani at the Track Shack, and reminisced to a sound that might best describe my high school years...hard rock!
With influences that range from Zappa, Clapton, Zeppelin, and even Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, these guys are finding their own sound. Brockton is indeed bursting with talent!
