Artist History
Joel Anderson has always had a fascination with music which no doubt stemmed from his father being in a band. At age six, Joel started playing the drums and by age 10 he realized he had the uncanny ability to pick up just about any instrument and play it well. Guitar, piano, trumpet, banjo, you name it, Joel could probably play it. In Junior high school, he put together a band with some kids from his neighborhood. They wore brown paper bags over their heads and called themselves The Bag Heads. All through high school and early adulthood he played in various bands, but it wasn’t until he became a father at age 21 that Joel really started to take music seriously. Joel then joined a band in Oakland named Tirebelly. They were together for 5 years and had done tours in the pacific northwest, Arizona and the Midwest. As their enthusiasm waned and their momentum slowed down, Joel met David Ramos, and soon joined Slight.
David Ramos began singing at age 12 in the shadow of his very musical older brothers. Every day after school he used to run home to his second story bedroom window, turn on the stereo and sing to all his classmates as they walked by. With a strong desire to perform, he started to play guitar at age 16. At the same time, he joined chorus and musical theater in High School. Not knowing what direction he was headed, David skipped college and travelled around the country. It was in his traveling that he began writing songs and realizing that there was only one thing he wanted to do in life; play music. After six months of travelling, he and his brothers formed the band Blue Skye Mourning. They toured up and down the East Coast for three years, but tensions between the brothers drove the band apart. David then went to New York to record his first solo album and slowly started building his own studio. The following year he wrote 60 songs and recorded 40 of them for two separate albums. All of this was in preparation for putting together a new band. In 1998 he took his studio and well over a hundred songs and moved to San Francisco to form Slight.
Dennis Haneda’s father got him his first acoustic guitar at age 10. His dad taught him some chords and promised that if Dennis learned three songs, he would buy him an electric guitar. A couple weeks later, they were shopping for a Gibson Epiphone at Haight Ashbury music. Throughout his youth, it became obvious that he took music more seriously than anyone around him. He played in a number of bands, but became frustrated with the lack of commitment showed by fellow musicians. As Dennis got older, his musical journey turned inward. He became very particular about his guitar playing; listening to classic rock, jazz and country and being heavily influenced by Steely Dan. Simultaneously he started experimenting with drugs. Over the next few years, he saw some very dark days. At age 20, the drugs began to take over his life. In 1997 Dennis suffered through the tragic loss of his mother at the hands of cancer. That year he put himself though rehab, and replaced his addictions with a renewed love of music. After several years of looking for people he could connect with musically, he met David Ramos. Together they formed the band Slight.
Bebo Bharwani started playing music at age 14 for his Church in the Philippines. The church band needed a bassist, so Bebo picked this instrument almost by default. Soon he grew to love playing bass, and was very much influenced by Sting and Paul McCartney. It didn’t take long for his talents to get noticed. At age 17 he was recruited into the band “Second Wind”. That band was singed to a subsidiary of EMI records and went on to sell almost 40,000 albums. Although the band would regularly play for crouds of 2,000 people, Bebo was unhappy with their lack of musical growth. He then went on to write and produce “The Air I Breath”, a worship and praise album on Frail Records. With all of his success in the Philippines, he still felt that the music scene there was stagnant and would only hold him back. At age 24 he decided to move to the United States and search for something better. A year later, he met David and Dennis and joined Slight.
