Press Reviews
Los Angeles Collegian---Tuesday, October 15, 2002---Volume 147, Number 3------"NEGATIVE 47 - A Breath of Fresh Air"---by: Kenneth Wesley~~~~~For the most part, the Collegian staff has never been a fan of nu-metal. It's obviously loud and not very good.
To be honest, some of us don't even like any of the rock bands out today. Something has been lost since the good bands aren't around anymore. Listen to KROQ for proof of that.
So, at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go on October 1st, it was kind of refreshing to hear a brand new band that has just come out. Negative 47, a new band composed of Palisades High classmates, has been around since October 2001, but after some personnel changes, the group's lineup was finalized in May 2002. Joseph Ramirez, guitarist and vocalist, Sean Whitley, drummer and Glen Castleberry, bassist started off like any band during their first gig anywhere: nervous.
During the breaks between the songs, the band seemed very nervous and timid. There were times where they seemed frantic.
Their playing, on the other hand, was above average. Frenetic pacing and energy made the place move all around. It's a shame that on some occasions, the instruments drowned out their singing completely. They did play excelent. Sean bashed the crap out of his drum set, Glen was pretty mellow on bass, and Joseph was pretty energetic throughout the show.
Once again, this is a very young band. There are some mistakes they've already made; like playing all their songs through an entire set. That's like giving away the whole CD for free. But, this band will become really good, really soon. They just need a bigger audience. |
