Artist History
Ever since he can remember, Lee has written songs. His band life began in junior high school, playing covers and performing at junior high dances and high school parties. Brian Fechino, currently the guitarist in Giant Records' Pat McGee Band, was in Lee's first three bands, culminating in their final aural assault, Rosebud, with Gwar's own "Jizmac the Gusher" (Brad Roberts) on drums.
After a 7 year run, Rosebud broke up and Lee moved to Nashville to go to college and to take a stab at the legitimate music business. Realising commercial country music wasn't his thing, he moved back to Virginia and soon hooked up with Monty Jones-forming the now-legendary band Lee Harris & Chicken.
With the onslaught of affordable digital recording gear, plus the help of online MP3-hosting services like MP3.com and the IUMA, Lee and Monty seperately and together created dozens of "bands," from surf music to a Truck Drivin' Music Band to Ukulele rock. Out of these projects, Monty's Ukulele Hipster Kings took it to the stage bewildering audiences and soundmen alike, with Monty's electric Ukulele, Lee on bass, and Chicken's Hunter Boxley on drums. Another band that bore fruit from this period of intense creativity was Planetary Records' Meanflower, a folk-rock brainchild of Dave McCormack and his brother, Tom. Lee was again on bass, and Monty put down the Ukulele to play drums.
While in Meanflower, Lee got the ridiculous idea to write, produce, and record a 100 song album. After 5 months of intense work, his 4 CD epic Five Score was born, featuring contributions from Lee's music-making friends from
pent-up house, One Ring Zero, Meanflower, The Waking Hours, The Rachel Nevadas, and many more. Also around this time, one of Lee's side projects, The Lee Harris Combo, a Booker-T. and the MG's/Bill Black Combo-styled homage, was picked to supply music on a CD-ROM that came with the October, 2000 issue of Digital FOTO magazine.
Deciding to bust out on his own, Lee enlisted Monty Jones on drums and Corey Hammond, an incredible songwriter and musician in his own right, on bass. They started learning songs from all eras of Lee's activity. Songs previously heard in Rosebud, Chicken, Meanflower, and the Ukulele Hipster Kings found their way into the set, as well as a healthy dose of songs from Five Score and Lee's catalogue of over a thousand songs.
The Lee Harris 3 have played up and down the East Coast-The Cave in Chapel Hill, Poe's Pub, Holy Chow, Sidewalk Cafe, and Swingers in Richmond VA, Dogfish Head Brewery in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and are preparing to go in the studio with Kieran Wagner late of Criterion studios in Miami and The Record Plant in NYC.
All of this musical mayhem can be sorted through and pondered over at Lee's website, http://www.leeharrisonline.com.
