Artist History
At that time, in 1983, 17-year-old Tito James had the dubious honour of being San Quentin's youngest ever inmate. While banged up in solitary (aka "the hole"), Tito could hear the incessant thumbing of a drum machine. It came from the cell of death-row inmate, Everett Pial. Pial, known as LA's notorious "red light bandit" had composed an electronic track about prison life called Cell 2455 Death Row. Tito already knew Pial from an earlier meeting. Pial sent over to Tito's cell (via a sympathetic guard) a copy of electro compilation in which the first track of his demo appeared. Tito was inspired by Pial's example. Learning the fundamental mechanics of composing as he went along, over the course of the next 18 months Tito would eventually produce a 4 track demo which was smuggled out to Wallis who played it her friends and declared that although it was unpublishable, Tito evinced a nascent composing talent. But it would take a further 17 years before a book of Tito's reached publication. |
