Artist History
screaming underwater
…back in the winter of 1998, Jason Krzepina (guitars) and Allen Thompson (drums) formed what was known as One Grisly Day. A type of dark metal their goal was to create some of the most obscure, melodic, atmospheric, yet beautifully intricate music. Joe Waltz (…of at that time Sanctorum, and now Myth), joined us on bass duties and Tom Shaffner (ex Chokeslam, Sadist Factory, now production for Mushroomhead) picked up vocal duties. Four songs were written, completed and performed. The band continued to write new songs but this time minus the vocal talents of Tom Shaffner and with the addition of Miranda Busler on female vocals, and Joe Waltz took over male vocal duties. Unfortunately Jason Krzepina left the band and the only remaining members were Allen (drums), Miranda (voice), Joe Waltz (who now took over guitar). Rehearsals went on but nothing much came out of it and the band went on hiatus.
The search went on to look for new guitarists. A guitar player by the name of Todd was chosen and soon the talents of Dave Schneider were picked up. With some more searching a viola player was found to add the classical influence to our unique style of metal. Joe went over to vocal duties only as Dave’s brother Pat joined us on bass. All being a mess this was we still managed to work on prospective songs. The first gig with the new lineup was scheduled and much looked forward to. During this time, vocalist Joe chose to leave the band to pursue his various other projects he had lined up. With a show on the way, Dave suggested Jason George to lead the band. Jason was quickly snatched up and many rehearsals took place in order to fully prepare for the show. Katie, on viola unfortunately left to the band due to lack of time before the show but it still went on. The next show would be opening for Mushroomhead and unfortunately after that show Todd was currently not having the time either. Miranda soon left the band due to personal reasons which… is actually where it all began…
…the four piece known as screamingunderwater came about as the disintegration of One Grisly Day. They pressed on with Jason (vocals/guitars), Dave (guitars), Pat (bass/voice), Allen (drums/voice).
They abandoned the previous style for a style all of their own … a blend of everything… a mix of melodic hardcore, groove, funk, extreme metal, blues, jazz and doses of atmosphere. The name change came about because it was felt that One Grisly Day no longer fit the current format of the band, screamingunderwater was chosen and believed to represent the bands wide-range boundaries (of which they are not many at all).
Numerous shows have been played since the incarnation that is known as screamingunderwater, playing with such bands as Dying Fetus, Lacuna Coil (Italy), Moonspell (Portugal), Mushroomhead, Pro-Pain, and many more other acts including many local acts. The band also received second place in the Cleveland Agora’s battle of the bands contest, Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The band recently finished recording their 3-song CD entitled ‘screams from the basement’
It contains two newer tracks and one older track from the One Grisly Day area done to our own decree.
Also a bonus track that is as wacky as a Kevin smith movie. We are looking to go back into the studio soon to hopefully record 4 more songs plus a cover song. We are looking around for studios now…
We have been described by people who have looked/listened over our CD as… "a mix of Slipknot, R.E.M., Powderburn, Primus…" "it sounds like if David Byrne of the Talking Heads would join Tool…"
"very theatrical, atmospheric and definitely combining very distinct metal sounds with beautiful parts to create a great blend of everything…"
It has even been said that this is what Steve Ray Vaughn would have sounded like if he joined an extreme/hardcore band and sped up about 100 bpm on the metronome.
…with all that said, screamingunderwater is looking to broaden their fan base and listening base. With numerous appearances on a local punk/hardcore show 88.3 WBWC we have given away free CDs and had some requests for our songs. We are speaking with some other people for some out of town gigs and have some great shows booked in the coming time.
