Artist History
Dave Askren, based in Los Angeles, California,
grew up in Dayton, Ohio, where he was surrounded
by music - his mother was a church organist and
piano teacher. After playing piano, clarinet and
saxophone at an early age, he discovered the
guitar and began playing music professionally
by age 15. After high school, Dave moved to
Boston, where he attended Berklee College of
Music and also studied privately with guitarist
Mick Goodrick, pianist Charlie Banacos,
saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, and even drummers
Bob Gullotti and Bob Moses. Dave was soon hired
to teach guitar at Berklee. While on the East
Coast, Dave also performed with a variety of
recording artists, including drummer Bob Moses,
saxophonist Antonio Hart, trombonist Delfeayo
Marsalis, vibraphonist and jazz harmonica player
Hendrik Muerkins, bassist Stuart Hamm, and even
fellow guitarists Gray Sargeant, and Kevin
Eubanks (who also lived in Boston before his
“Tonight Show” fame). Dave is currently based in
Los Angeles, where he has performed with artists
such as singers Linda Hopkins, Marilyn McCoo,
saxophonist Gary Foster, Tony Rizzi’s “Wire Choir”
with Pete Christlieb, and “Rhubumba” featuring
Bobby Shew and a hot Cuban rhythm section with
Rigaberto Lopez on bass and Jimmy Branley on
timbales. (watch for a new CD). |
