Artist description
One cello, one acoustic guitar, one electric guitar and three voices. Two men, one woman. The rhythm is built with intricate relationships between the three insturments. It's pop enough to sing along to, but serious enough to stay interesting.

Artist History
The three members of Annavox met at a weekly poetry open mic in Southeast Portland. The cafe, called Mojo's, was where they experienced each other’s work in the form of spoken word. From the beginning, all three had completely different styles, and sensed the potential for an interesting collaboration. Their conception was in the fall of 2000, and soon they recorded a homemade ep with 5 original songs. Using this EP to spread the word, they received warm regards from friends and strangers alike, and began playing parties and cafes. With introspective vocals, and upbeat melodies, the band decided to forgo the usual step of finding a drummer, and they let the music stand as it did in the living room where it was written. “All Day Breathing” was recorded before Annavox had played many visible shows. But since returning home from the recording session in August of last year, they’ve been approached by venues in Portland, and even stretched to Eugene. Through the love and support of their friends and families, “All Day Breathing” has been a success for these young musicians. Their plans include touring through the winter, possibly recording their second album in the summer of 2003, and eating homegrown tomatoes as soon as possible. |

Group Members
Anna Fritz, cellist, comes from Milwaukee, Wisconson. Her classical training started at age 6, and her personal experimentation come in her late teens. Now in her early twenties, she moved to Portland to push herself artistically in a completely foreign environment.
David Waingarten has flirted with musical performance ever since high school, but considers himself a filmmaker at heart. His guitar playing and singing, extremely inspiring and beautiful, has mostly been used as personal meditation. Originally from upstate New York, he came to Portland to continue making short films and to see what it was like on the other side of the country.
David Gerritsen, born and raised in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, made his pilgrimage to Oregon in his early twenties after deciding his home town would never reflect his political beliefs. His career as a singer/songwriter has taken him to coffee shops and pizza joints throughout the west. In playing with Annavox, he helps lend a rhythm to the lilting sounds of his counterparts.

"Anna Fritz is a Milwaukee native that studied
classical cello at UW-Madison before moving out
to the Pacific Northwest, where she hooked up
David Gerritsen and David Waingarten to form
Annavox, an unusual trio that uses two guitars,
cello and voice to create passionate, intimate
music."

"Nathan Lester, who produced their album, 'All Day Breathing,' said he was amazed when the trio went into the studio to make the album. He said
they only had to record one or two takes to lay down a track, instead of the usual three to four. Lester said Annavox is unlike any other folk band he has heard. 'It's not the typical bass, drums, guitar,' he said. 'It's got complexity and subtlety.'"

Volume 66, Number 17
by Laurel Brauns
Their commitment to the beauty of language will shine through, adding an uncommon depth to this indie-folk debut.
Anna Fritz's ethereal, melancholic and angry cello lends Annavox a unique sound that sets it apart from other contemporary folk bands. Dave Waingarten and David Gerritsen share the alchemy and creative teamwork of Simon & Garfunkel. Alternative rock has clearly influenced the melody and arrangements, sans drums and bass.
"All Day Breathing" explores relationships without over-indulging heartbreak or over-romanticizing love's possibilities. More over, the music communicates the grayer areas, equating the notion of finding true love with spiritual awakening, both of which, at times, can seem equally unreachable.
Reminiscent of Radiohead's "OK Computer" or early Modest Mouse lyrics, the political edge to the album is subtle and purposefully inclusive rather then exclusive.

"Annavox is one to watch, combining guitars, cello, and yes, sincere vocals that go from folky to poppy so you don't get bored."
