Artist History do not cut the excess off of the string. when it breaks, if at the bridge, take the broken part and separate the ball from the broken wire (wire cutters are useful for this). next, grasp onto the ball with needle-nose vice grips. bend the string around the ball about one inch from the end. using a second pair of pliers, wrap the bent part around the main portion of the string tightly. replace on guitar, and you can use your broken string all over again.
