Artist History
I was born in the summer of '78 at the state fair during an Andrew Gold concert. I was delivered in the nurses station backstage right after the encore of "Lonely Boy."
That day sealed my fate. My parents split soon after and Mom went into rehab. I was sent off to foster care. I lived in a strict Southern Baptist household where secular music was not allowed. My only escape was listening to the AM radio in the boiler room of my elementary school with my only friend, the janitor. I loved him and the music. We would listen to Starbuck's "Moonlight Feels Right" and Jigsaw's "Sky High" and dance around with mops and brooms as if they were magnificent ladies at a summer cotillion. Afterwards, I would trudge home, head held down as the other kids would throw great clumps of sod at me. I was in hell but at least I had the music.
Flash forward twenty years. I was still in hell. A hell of my own design. Working in an office processing eviction notices. What happened? I forgot all about the music. One day I was eating lunch at my desk, listening to the radio two desks over from mine. It was Z-100 and some guy was singing as if he was trying to push out a giant bowel movement. I think it was Creed. The person who sat in that desk had gone for a smoke so I got up and changed the station. What the hell was this! Someone was playing "Lonely Boy." I fell back against the nubby blue fabric of the cubicle wall. Yes. How could I forget? The music. Of course!
I ran to the music store. They could help me. I walked in and stared at the drums. So beautiful. The old man behind the counter showed me a magical champagne sparkle Ludwig drum kit. I was in heaven. I took them home and taught myself how to play. I joined a band. I joined two bands. I joined eleven bands. Punk rock bands, indie bands, oompah bands. It was so much fun- but still, I wasn't happy. I couldn't understand why. Of course the answer is always right in front of you, if you care to look... LONELY BOY!!!!!
It flashed like a giant neon sign with some of the letters burnt out. It read "NELY BOY" but I could still figure it out. I threw the drums into the basement and got busy writing my own songs. Songs that I loved. Like the music I heard on that AM radio back in grade school. King Harvest, Pilot, Edison Lighthouse, Player and Gilbert O'Sullivan, these were my heroes. It took forever but I managed to finish ten songs. Some of them are on this webpage. Why not give them a listen? |
