Artist History
They began making noise at age five in Auckland's vast and inviting harbour. Their first instrument was an abandoned noisepedal that washed up onshore: Their mother made them a squarewave on her sewing machine.
When they were eight, their parents bought them a P-class effects unit and they began to perform, touring with their three siblings on Rangitoto Island off Auckland to climb the volcanic crater. There would later be family cruises to Tonga and Fiji.
Their appetite for noise had been whetted, and in 1973 they competed in their first Noisebread, the multiple-leg round-the-world noise event now called the Volvo Noise Race. After finally winning aboard Steinlager II in their fifth and final attempt in 1990, they turned their attention to the Jules Noise Trophy, the extreme challenge, conceived by the French, in which competitors race nonstop around the planet. |
