Artist description
Five Minutes Fast is a Cleveland-based melodic, power-pop quartet that believes there is still a place in this world for great songwriting and extraordinary albums, in their entirety. After playing in different local acts, the members of Five Minutes Fast came together in 1998 to record a self-titled CD (released in 1999) that blends hook-laden pop sensibility with a fresh depth, texture and quality.
The radio-friendly songs have been described as "engaging", "passionate", and "something for everyone" while being compared to the likes of Vertical Horizon, Train, The Calling and Semisonic. Five Minutes Fast has excelled during their live shows in support of the album, and their captivating performances have established a loyal regional following.
While playing live comes natural to the group, writing songs is what lead singer Jason Kilbey Smith describes as "the most enjoyable part." "Jason is the leader," explains guitarist and brother, Kevin Bang. "He challenges us to step outside of the musicians that we've been before to expand." The band is committed to the integrity of their music; they work songs out at their own pace until they are completely satisfied with the end product.
There is a direct connection between the band's success and their rapport. Even though the members of Five Minutes Fast didn't come together as a group until 1998, they had all known each other since 1993 while touring the Cleveland club scene with their previous bands. Smith and Bang enjoyed regional success for four years in "World in a Room." Bassist Marty Kanan and drummer Eric Everett had played together in "Public Library." After the disbanding of their former acts, Smith and Bang had been playing out acoustically but were looking to start something new. At the same time, Kanan and Everett were interested in a new project, so the combination of the rhythm section and lead guitars and vocals came together naturally.
The members of Five Minutes Fast have experienced significant musical growth together over the last four years. This success has afforded them a positive outlook on their future as they currently are in the studio recording a new album of songs, full of substance. They have played these songs out live to rave reviews. Like those acts that Five Minutes Fast has been most closely compared to, they have found their niche -- to produce a polished, modern sound that stays true to the integrity of putting out an exemplary album of songs.
