Artist History
Dullshine. Not dull, does shine. The band are relative newcomers, having
taken only four years to evolve into the confident four piece that
regularly surprise those as yet unacquainted with their energetic live sets
or recordings. Here is a band that knows how
to make friends and influence people. Providing a crowd for almost every
touring band to have passed through Essex in the last 15 months, they enjoy
the attention of the dedicated and ever growing toxic youth choir (the gang
of skaters and park rats ever present at their gigs).
The band promotes itself unconventionally. They record regularly and have
given away hundreds of free audio and video CDs at gigs. Their music, images
and merchandising is available free or at cost on their website, which to
date has received over 30,000 hits. The bands messageboard is accessible to
anyone with a mobile phone and they frequently make good on their claim to
prefer playing a large crowd for no money than a small one for good money.
It is this kind of accessibility that has allowed them to create the buzz
and momentum so many aspiring young bands crave yet fail to achieve.
You could easily stick Dullshine in the same box as Blink, Jimmy Eat World,
A, Feeder or any one of hundreds of quality rock acts in the MTV2 mould. But
you would be missing the point. Dullshine will admit to being crowd
pleasers, will even admit to the occasional ‘influence’. But this is no
carbon copy – with reference points a million miles apart, the bands
approach to writing and creating a live set is summed up by their claim to
“not just live breath and sleep music, but to kill and eat it too’.
