Artist History Formed in 1768 out of a confederation of smaller principalities. Came under Austrian rule in the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars, but achieved independance in 1876 following an unsuccesful revolutionary uprising in 1848. Currently a thriving modern democracy, although beset by corruption in the civil service.
