Artist History
ONE EYED JACKS are an original band similar in style to Ben Folds Five, Counting Crows, Elvis Costello, and U2. Their blend of modern and roots rock, funky, catchy piano licks and pop sensibilities, has been earning them a steady following in the South Bay Area, and in Sacramento. With an arsenal of over forty original songs, and more than thirty covers, the band is able to constantly keep things fresh, and keep their audiences coming back.ONE EYED JACKS recently completed a stretch of 23 dates in support of their recent "Goodnight Moon" CD. The dates included performances in San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Campbell, Elverta, Sacramento, and San Jose, in such venues as The Lost and Found Saloon, Triangle Lounge, The Quarter Note, Cactus Club, The Stoney Inn, Hogshead Brew Pub, The Roadhouse, Marilyns, Off the Hook and others. In November 1999, the band sold out the 120 seat Gaslighter Theater in Campbell for their CD release party. In February of 2001, the band performed on San Francisco television’s Club Alto. The One Eyed Jacks studio audience for this broadcast was the lasrgest in the show’s history. In July of 2001, One Eyed Jacks will play out doors at the Connoisseur’s Market Festival in Menlo Park with the veteran Bay Area band Zazu Pitts.ONE EYED JACKS thrive in a live atmosphere. Lead singer/pianist/songwriter William Cleere's enormous vocal range allows him to use everything from a howl to a haunting whisper to convey the song. His piano playing and energy are equally as dynamic. His playing is anchored perfectly by drummer and co-songwriter Charles Crabtree. Charles plays rock drums with a jazz mentality, he's not just providing the beat, he's part of the melody. His drum lines often become hooks unto themselves. Setting the groove alongside Crabtree is bassist Ray Alvarado. Ray's rolling bass grooves provide the pulse underneath it all, and his onstage energy is unparalleled. Ray is never still with his instrument, dancing at all times, having as much fun as anyone in the place. Michael Cassady on percussion brings a wealth of rhythmic texture to the band, with everything from traditional congas to shakers, cymbals and maracas. Cassady also provides backup vocals. With a chameleon-like voice, he is almost indiscernible from Cleere when he provides harmonies. Jason Mills' lead and rhythm guitar is the glue that holds the whole thing together. With robotic rhythm and soaring melodic lead lines, Jason's guitar work accentuates and highlights the piano and vocals, and his own solos command the audience's attention. ONE EYED JACKS are also at home in the studio. In 1997, they released the highly acclaimed CD "Resolution." This CD featured the single "The Girl From NYC" which was played heavily on KSCU college radio in Santa Clara. KSCU DJ Eric Klotz used to open his show with it every night. The album also received positive nods from Bay Area Publications The Metro, The San Jose Mercury News, and The Sunnyvale Sun |
