Artist description
Seattle’s Mountain Consolidated is a musical hybrid, a six-member band that bridges the gap between the groove of contemporary urban music and the country-folk tradition, along with an intelligent sense of irony and humor. With one foot in the musical roots of folk, blues and country and the other knee deep in hip-hop, Mountain Con’s sound has been likened to the mixes of Beck and the roots sound layered over hip-hop that you get from artists like R.L. Burnside. |

Artist History
In late 1997, singer/songwriter James Nugent formed the early ideas for Mountain Con when he began an experiment putting Van Morrison songs to drum machines. Nugent then got in touch with former band mates from Missoula Montana band The Elements, drummer Mike Watt, and bassist/engineer Pierre Ferguson to further the experiment of combining the folk-country sound they had been influenced by growing up with their love of hip hop. Once Nugent began incorporating his original songs into the mix, he solicited his pal Erik Blood to integrate breakbeats into the recordings and magic happened. A Tacoma native with a background in urban and electronic music, Blood brought to the project his production abilities along with his unique brand of hip-hop beats and turntabalism. To solidify the band’s live sound they recruited another former band mate Swede, a slide and steel guitar player, and life-long friend, organist Ben Erickson. |
