Artist description
There are many types of voices. The R&B diva. The hard rock belter. The pop crooner. But most important are the artists whose music gives voice to the aspirations of a people. Keali’i Reichel is that voice for native Hawaiians. He has becomethe most successful native Hawaiian singer ever, combining traditional, native language songs and chants with contemporary, English language pop music. |

Artist History
His 1994 debut album, Kawaipunahele, was the best-selling recording in Hawaiian music history, with over 450,000 units in retail sales to date. His second album, Lei Hali’a, has surpassed 3/4 of a million units sold. Much of the emotional quality in Keali’i’s recordings is conveyed through the traditional art of chanting that has been indigenous to native Hawiian music for centuries. Prior to his recording career, he started chanting at the age of 17 and studied Hawaiian at the University of Hawaii. By age 26, he sought formal chant training. |
