Colligere "s/t" CD
8/10 - [Vida Simples]
Holy shit… I am blown away by this masterpiece. Colligere is a hardcore band from Brazil, and let me just tell you that they are fucking amazing… fucking amazing! Their style is pretty much in line with melodic old school hardcore, somewhat similar to later Gorilla Biscuits or Bold or something like that, with screaming vocals and a great sense of songwriting dynamics. "Transit" is one of only two tracks with lyrics in English, and it also introduces some brief singing vocals towards the end that are a nice touch. As for the music, things are pretty straightforward as far as the arrangements are concerned, but they do make great use of some dual guitar layering and throw in some excellent changes or unexpected breaks here and there. This is definitely not boring, and not rehashed - there's some heaviness, some dissonance, a good overall balance. I really, really like this. In fact, I'd probably go so far as to say that this is the best true hardcore release I've heard in quite a long time from an underground act. The production is slick as hell, and I'd only make some minor alterations. The ruggedness of the guitar sound doesn't bother me at all, but I'd definitely turn the bass up to add that extra low-end density. Everything else sounds fine, and the mix of rawness and clarity is perfect. Most of the lyrics are in Portuguese, but I know that these guys mean business and are really promoting a positive, intelligent message just based on the two songs with English lyrics. ("We trade pleasure in our bodies for the illusion of mind.") Those who can read Portuguese are in for a real treat, because the insert is a huge poster-sized foldout with all of the lyrics, extensive song explanations, etc. Plus there are two additional high gloss postcard inserts with some other messages on them. All of this comes housed in a plain white sleeve with a simple logo and icon printed on the front cover. Wonderful… This is just great material. I'm really impressed, and it goes to show that there are some awesome things going on in the underground music world that deserve far more attention.
