Artist History
When I look back over the past years, I can’t believe what an incredible journey it has been. I have so many things to be thankful for…so many great memories. Memories that I have shared with many people who have either helped me to rise above my potential or were the stepping stones in the process. All in all, my journey still remains in progress. I will always look back in time and remember the hardships that have molded me to be the woman I am today simply because it grounds me to remain hopeful, humble and grateful.
I remember the long walks my Grandmother and I would take to church and the cornfield. She would walk as though it were around the corner. My grandmother would stop and patiently wait until I caught up with her. She would hum a tune and share stories of her past as a young woman. I’d listen intently and ask questions. She would laugh and tell me, “You ask too many questions!” As we reached the cornfield, I’d follow her into the field to check on the area the planting would take place. We hoed the weeds and with a planting stick in hand walked through each row for the planting process. From that point on the walks to the cornfield increased. Every other day we watered and checked the cornfield. As a result, we were blessed with an abundant and bountiful harvest season.
As I sit and reflect upon the past, more memories come to mind of my relationship with my grandmother. I look at our relationship today and know I have all the wealth in the close bond I share with her. She planted me with the Navajo language and the life sustaining methods of the Diné. This was now the soil I was to harvest from. Throughout my life my grandmother has nurtured and supported me with the dedication and assurance of the corn, that grows tall and strong. Today, she continues to play a significant role in my life as I strive to reach my full potential.
In this album, I share valuable songs of our elders. These songs speak on their perception of life and how, we as youth should view our grandparents and the role they play in our lives. The elders are the roots of our stalks, the corn that is our traditional way. The time we spend with them is valuable and timeless.
This album is dedicated to the phenomenal woman who is the “Seed in my Life”, Dorothy Cody. You are the wind beneath my wings. I love and as always, my love for you is eternal.
