Artist History
Coup Fourre is a three-piece maelstrom of fury, passion, and desperation from New York City.
Formed in 2001 by Ohioans Steve Shodin and
Adam Rizer, who share vocal, bass, and guitar
duties, and Virginian Andy Craven on drums,
they set out to bridge the gap between the
decades of rock/punk dagger wielders from
Gene Vincent to the Rolling Stones to Wire to
Rites of Spring and onward. Their first show
was performed as My Sound is Your Signal to
Explode! with math dirge monsters Jumbo's
Kill Crane at the Midwest's best-kept secret the
Nyabinghi in Youngstown, Ohio. The show was
a rousing success - but only a hint of what was
to come in the not-so-distant-future. As the
fellows began to write more as a unit it became
clear that the band's chemistry was going to be
its driving force. The name was changed to
Coup Fourre (French for "blow lines" and a term
from the card game Milles Bornes). Their second show, a sold out hipster
extravaganza at New York's Brownies, was with
Chicago's 90 Day Men and fellow New Yorkers
Turing Machine and the Liars. The boys stepped
up and did what they had to do so that even in the
shadow of these three phenomenal bands they
were turning heads, drawing comparisons to
the sounds of Leeds in 78, Minneapolis in 81,
and D.C. in 90. But by the end of their set, the
general consensus was that they truly only sound
like Coup Fourre. Now it's the future that these
young men are concerned with and with every
show they sweep a few more recruits into their
irreverent army. The demo ep, recorded with
prodigious engineer Scott Rosenthal in Williamsburg,
Brooklyn, is an accurate depiction of the present,
but even the boys themselves cannot predict
where the future will take them.
Coup Fourre have performed with artists as
disparate as 90 Day Men,Blacktail, The Double,
Favorite Action Hero,Gil Mantera's Party Dream,
Jumbo's Kill Crane, The Liars, Matt Pond Pa,
MX2, Neptune, On Air Library, Oneida, Oxford
Collapse, Parker and Lily, The Prids, Professor
Murder, Turing Machine, and Young Sexy
Assassins just to name a few. |
