Thirty Seconds Long at AAA Electra 99
By Bud Yeager
6/7/2002
(Excerpt)
Thirty Seconds Long is a fabulous creation in itself. Capping off the night with over an hour of music, these young and ultra-talented emo-rockers from Glendora, California brought the house down. Led by vocalist/guitarist Jeremy Burgan, Thirty Seconds Long had a pleasant mix of punk sounds coming from a bunch of guys who were obvious fans of The Beatles and much of the music of the 1980’s.
Burgan has a soulful voice which is perfect for the types of songs he writes. He carries himself on stage like a true veteran, although he can’t be more than 19 years old. Showing his mettle at this show, he even played with a broken arm. This didn’t seem to affect his play on bit, and he still presented a wonderful show which delighted myself and everyone in attendance.
It takes a lot of courage to take a Paula Abdul song and turn it into a punk masterpiece, but Thirty Seconds Long did it. I was highly entertained. Burgan’s original songs certainly have an emo touch to them, right down to a few cheesy lyrics. But the lyrics don’t have to come off that way at all. I was taken by his ability to sing lyrics like “by the way I got fast food, thinking of you…” and admit it’s cheesy with a roll of the eyes, but by no mean apologizing for it. He is a true artist.
His backing band were also exceptional. Grant, their drummer (I got no last names from these guys) looked fantastic and kept solid time. Playing bare-footed and wearing wrist-bands, he looked like a pleasant flashback to my days of rocking in the 1970’s. Dave, the bassist seemed to be enjoying the art on the wall while playing. I thought that was a little odd at first until I realized he didn’t miss a thing, and is one hell of a fine bassist. Adrian, the second guitarist was a true pleasure for me to watch. Animated and funny and still hitting all the marks, Adrian is a fantastic guitar prodigy. These guys are certainly the Fab Four of Glendora.
What was touted as the first Radd Productions night at AAA Electra 99 was more than was promised to me, which is what caused me to write this article. I will certainly be back next time they do a gig like this at AAA. I love the venue, I love the bands. I have a hell of a lot of respect for a place that will “Fling subculture at the masses,” and have the attitude, “If you don’t like it, than f*ck off.”
