Artist History
The band was started almost two years ago by Roy,
Munch and Wasp. Then Antilectual were a punk rock
band in the style of NOFX and Lagwagon etc. Paget
was brought in on vocals coz no one else could
sing properly. Soon McSam joined on guitar as
well. We did a few gigs in small venues around
our local area with another young punk band called
'Fresh OJ'. We also made a 2 track demo CD but
the band never really progressed much.
Then we started getting into ska, our main
influences are the Mad Caddies, [Spunge],
and Less Than Jake. We decided to
invite Random Si and Joe in as our brass section.
Since then the band has never really looked
back, we got a new set together and started
developing our own style. We began to do gigs
more regularly and on a larger scale around the
Cambridgeshire and Essex areas. And recently
we won the Saffron Walden Rock Contest 2002.
This is the Antilectual that we all know and
love today!

Press Reviews
Carnival Rocks! 17/07/02
The Carnival continues its commitment to the community by providing something for everyone in the name of Rock Night last night. Local bands from in and around Saffron Walden aroused a mostly young and lively audience in a competition between four bands, all with their own material. First up where Reykjavik, a three piece band and did themselves proud as the first act to get the crowd warmed up.
Somerset West were on stage next, and proved themselves worthy with a set resulting in bare chested lead singer, Barney (needs a tan mind), putting in a excellent vocal performance, much to the delight of the crowd.
As the night drew in, Super 7 played some high quality music, the excellent sound system within the Marquee resonating their well played tunes to all corners.
Lastly, the crazed Antilectual set about upstaging the other bands with a stage performance of their own! An unusual seven piece band with a brass section, played some innovative songs, and despite breaking a bass guitar they continued to rouse the crowd into a near fervour resulting in rapturous applause.
And the winners, judging by our expert panel of band members deservedly awarded first prize to Antilectual much to the appreciation of everyone. So off they went again putting together a couple more performances to finish an excellent night off.
Andrew Minit Memorial Concert
Saffron Walden Town Hall - Friday 12th April
Bands: Jonny B and The Blues Makers, Chinese Apron, Dumbstruck and Antilectual.
"THERE'S STILL A BIG LIVE MUSIC SCENE IN SAFFRON WALDEN
Saffron Walden Town Hall was crammed - which was a good sign from the start. You do have to remember that the average age of any band member in any of the bands was no more than about 16.
The night kicked off with Johnny B and the Bluesmakers. They got the crowd dancing in fine style with their upbeat jazzy blues set.
Next came Chinese Apron, who seemed to be a crowd pleaser. They had a good sound but their timing needs a bit of work (hahahahaha!), just as I was getting into their groove it changed (it's not that bad lads, we think you're good any way).
Third on were Dumbstruck, the first of the bands to actually look like they were into and loving what they were doing. Their punky songs certainly started to whip the audience up.
And finally, the last band on were Antilectual, where do I start? They had charisma, style and basically were completely mad. Their mixture of ska and punk with an audience participation took us all to a different level, musically this was the band I enjoyed most, especially the funky chicken that was the trombonist. The band was by far the most entertaining of the night.
It's good to see that there is still a big live music scene in Saffron Walden, with young bands coming through again. I'm sure that Andy was looking on and laughing at all the antics of the night.
Well done guys, I had fun. Get a few more rehearsals in and you can only get better"
