Press Reviews
Gods of Music say this about Present Alien In Nature:
I thought it would be a lot easier to review a piece I had heard a multitude of times. The opposite seems to be true here, for I am having difficulty putting thoughts into prose.
This piece is one of a few that plunged me into the world of MP3. It awakened in me a desire to find intriguing music and to enjoy the intricacies and nuances of sound in general. At the time, I realized that a plethora of fine music was made accessible to me. The music was there, but my passion was not. This piece somehow made such an impression on me and instilled within me the desire to enjoy music. Now I have the privilege to review the song that made me a "musicologist".
The song is a piano composition in a New Age style. It seems bound more to a melody than most classical pieces, (most of which tend to be avant-garde, more or less) hence the description of this piece. Andy Orozco plays the melody in a driven manner, yet does not disturb the mood of mixed elation and sorrow carried with the song. Mr. Orozco intentionally embeds within his pieces a calm, serene aura, adding to a New Age feel. This is more evident in his other works (such as Soulless and Sleep), yet the atmosphere is not absent from this piece. It seems like a lesser component, yet a component nonetheless.
The first minute of the piece is the calmest part, utilized to build to a more intensely played melody. The following melody is not much different from the one used to start the song; it is virtually the same. However, Mr. Orozco plays this more forcefully and more progressively with more internal variance, creating a greater effect which prepares the mind for what is to come. After the second movement finishes, the calmer melody is replayed. This is an apt intermission and introduction for the last movement, one that is sheer beauty put to music.
At 3:48, the final movement commences. It is simply stunning how this new melody is played with such brilliance and such force and intricacy. Not just that, but a soothing and elated atmosphere is provided by a chorus of violins, adding a beautiful touch to the piece. The conglomeration of that and the piano are beyond description. The intensity of the piano melody, weaving within itself, coupled with splendid violins give this piece some amazing depth. Those alone provide an aura of sheer euphoria and exhilaration. All in all, a stunning work, worthy of praise. My mind is not a lexicon, so I cannot find the appropriate words to describe this song. They may not even exist for all I know.
I have had an abundance (about 6 months) of time to reflect on this song and its merits. If I apply harsh critical thought; I can find error. The only thing I found flawed was the production quality. That in itself is only a minor problem here. It does not impede the song and the atmosphere and feeling the song emanates simply overwhelms any problem. This song is one of the best I've heard, but in my opinion, there is no perfect song. However, this piece is not far from it.
To all of you out there, I urge you to listen to this song. Music does not really get much better than this.
