Sometime February 2001. This is normally a period of hibernation for rock groups, but tonight the Trasheteria is featuring a double-bill of the city’s pop rock veterans Peacock and this evening’s headliners, THE HUSHTONES. It’s a Thursday night, and you would think that the college & university kids could fill this living room-sized venue during these desolate times for live gigs. Not so. Obviously the safe appeal of Friends and Survivor has locked the legions of would-be-fans in their homes. There are exactly 12 of us in the audience, and a third of this meager population is comprised of members the opening band. No matter, it becomes a private show for the lucky. I’m witnessing something special tonight. I’m witnessing that abstract limbo between the secret and the secret getting out. A long-maned titan and his rhythm section take the “stage area” at the Trash to do a cursory sound check. The surprisingly soft-spoken guitarist/vocalist announces something about an EP that will be out soon and politely thanks the opening band. For the next near-hour, he delivers one roaring riff after another while comfortably delivering his sleek baritone. Behind this soulful garage rock epicenter lies a dichotomous rhythm section: a bass player that anchors the energy with a fairly straight style and a solid sonic basement, while a mop-haired drummer contributes to the band’s edge as he bashes away at his kit like he’s killing flies with two mallets. I don’t know the names of any of these songs, but that means nothing to me. In a town full of folkies, this triumvirate has successfully rocked every ass in the venue this evening and I already know I’ll be humming a few of these songs during my ride home down Highway 28. And now we are finally blessed with the first recorded moment from the Hushtones. It is a teaser of grand proportions - an eponymous-titled EP that is but a mere five songs clocking in at 15 minutes and 4 seconds. This is the type of single EP relatively unfamiliar to our native soil and more common to the U.K. or U.S. If the Hushtones were based out of London or Detroit there would already be NME and CMJ covers and superlatives casually tossed around the music community. But for now – like the first time I saw them live – they remain the secret of a privileged few. There will be comparisons offered from all over the place. Some have already proclaimed them the next heirs of Danko Jones’s royalty. I hear Urge Overkill without the embarrassing excess. Sometimes I may even spot Paul Stanley fronting the Kinks. Think of the Hushtones as part of the next wave of understanding the importance of the classics. There is no camouflage here. This is brawny, brainy and sexy rock without the modern day trappings. They don’t need tattoos, piercings, or hip-hop or jungle beat fusions to catch your attention. They understand what will really make you move and sing-a-long. Don’t believe me? Buy the EP and inspire a full-length. Soon. Ian A.D. Jack Co-author, 'Have Not Been The Same: The CanRock Renaissance' Singer/guitarist/songwriter of the Headpets
