Artist description
Talking to Walls is a jangle power-pop band, based on the collaboration of many different people. They are alive in their songs - introspective, almost-folk songs turned punk rockers with strong musical hooks.
Primary songwriter Brian Kelly writes constantly - something that Guided by Voices fans can appreciate. Poetic lyrics mixed with instantly accessible melodies are the norm - like those happy Cure and Counting Crows songs that you crave on the radio. His melencholy and emotional voice draws comparisons to Jim Morrison, while the bouncing pop of guitar-oriented music like the Stone Roses and The Replacements allow for the tunes to be enjoyed live by audiences looking for something more than the navel-gazing some bands offer. He is well supported by his friends, especially drummer John Deuth's affirmative, yet artistic drumming patterns - Phish and The Police are easily recognized influences.
Kelly, Deuth, and the rest of the members that appear in the band's recordings and performances have mostly played together in other bands, at one time or another. Friendships develop over time; that time has been granted to all of them. They are more than haphazard musicians looking for a home - they are friends who want to see each other excel. Much of the groundwork for Talking to Walls was laid with Deuth and Kelly's former band, Euphorium. After a few years, the band succumbed to difficulties typical of young bands (departure of a guitarist, almost drowning at a rain and mud-soaked gig on the beach, and a cross-country threat of a lawsuit from nobody the band ever met). But their friendship and mutual admiration remained, and sparked ambitions once again.
Talking to Walls is a band that lives within its art, not detached from it. Each song is torn from the heart, with that still-beating intensity, as each one reveals just a little more about Kelly's life as he explodes on the stage. There is a very sincere aura that these are exactly the songs he wants to play, and Deuth backs him up, every step of the way. In this way joy can catch on to the audience, even amid the melancholy. Such is life - a light out of sadness, sorrow into joy. A redemption in the making. |
